Clean Boost Question

Re: Clean Boost Question

Ok, here is a thought, how about a an EQ last in chain??? this should just bring the volume up but not push the pre-amp further???

Sounds like a good idea to me.

However, I'd just set up so that rhythm player at max volume on his guitar is equal to yours at say 7 volume, so that when you play lead you just turn up your volume on guitar, and when you are done go back to 7. Oh well.

Re: Clean Boost Question

Most of all these troubles really just boils down to this, that people do not listen to each other very much.
So it gets louder and louder, and the ears gets fatigued and then it just goes down the hill;)
Ease up, try to dial in more clear sounds, and of course boosters add noise, the whole volume goes up!!!!!!!!!
And if it is already hitting the ceiling...well more noise and compression.

Re: Clean Boost Question

Rid, well you know that a lot of times due to space/type of songs/gear difference and etc, things don't click, then you know that most of the @$$holes on the soundboard in the clubs don't know what they are doing and you have friends in between songs telling you from the floor that they did not hear your leads, I wanna have some volume on tap for things like that, you never used a boost???

Re: Clean Boost Question

Nopes never....always yelled at my bandmates....I was probally awful to work with:D
But we always tried to sound good at the very least.
The only I could not hear myself, was with a B3 organ leslie parked right next to my amp;)
Relocated myself....hehe those things are loud!!
In the end, we parked that damn rotator further behind...lol

I like that idea because i can boost the sound as well as hone the tone of the solo. But do eq pedals have enough ouput for a signifigant boost?

Re: Clean Boost Question

Try the MI Audio Boost & Buff. I use it after my overdrives for a boost when I'm doing blusier or country gigs or to kick the input of my JCM 800 up a notchwhen playing with my 80's tribute band. It's the only pedal that migrates between my three seperate rigs. Plus the "always on" buffer really helps stop tone loss as well

Re: Clean Boost Question

More like what Rid said ... need to talk to other band members too.

I can always tell if the other musicians are really good by listening to the way they play when the other guy is soloing. For example, I've almost never seen guys starting out who really listen to each other and give everyone room ... many times they keep escalating until it's just a noise war.

Something to think about anyway ...

Re: Clean Boost Question

I've always used a boost last in the chain. If you increase the gain too much before other pedals it kills the tone. There could be some uses for having a boost before other pedals (maybe to increase the gain of an OD), but last in the chain is probably almost always best.

As long as you don't have the preamp cranked you'll get an increase in volume. There is a point of saturation though where it just gets muddy. I use a Nick Greer Boost - fattens it up just a bit and doesn't add noise. You have to watch kicking the knob though...

Hope it helps.

Re: Clean Boost Question

Hmm ... not the cheapest way of doing things, any comments on Xotic effects AC booster???

AC Booster is a nice pedal, but for what you are looking for, the RC Booster would be a better choice. Another option would be an MXR Micro Amp in the loop. From what I remember, the older ones have heavier duty switches.

RC booster??? doesn't it push the pre-amp much harder than AC, I just want a jump in volume, I really like my current tone for rythm and leads at one setting. From what I've read AC is cleaner and pretty much clean with gain barely on. MXR micro amp in the loop, how trasperent will it be ? how about AC booster in the loop.

Re: Clean Boost Question

I use an MXR micro amp into ther effects loop of my Cornfords, and I get a great solo boost that doesn't seem to colour the sound in any way... just louder whether it is clean or driven. I wanted a Keeley Java boost to go with my Fuzz head and Compressor, but they aren't cheap. I think the MXR would be a good pedal to try, but as the other guys on here say... if you put it into the front of the amp you will get more gain because the valves (assuming it's a valve amp?) are being pushed harder. It made a massiver difference to my lead volume. All the best.

Re: Clean Boost Question

Sorry, forgot to mention that I use a BOSS GE7 graphic eq pedal to DRIVE my amps from time to time to give me a variation of drive sounds! If you got a crunch sound going on ala Thin Lizzy for eg, then I kick in the GE7 and it gives me a really clear and yet nice overdriven sound, coz it's pushin the valves....and if I boost the mids on the pedal right up I can get that Gary Moore Parisienne Walkways thing going too. I have tried this just as a volume boost, but no real dif in vol to my ears whereas the MXR (Last in the in the loop as I put the delay in their too) gives me a great leap in headroom.

Re: Clean Boost Question

d1dsj,
Thanks mate, that sounds great, the amp is Laney AOR-Pro-Tube Lead 50MV.
Did you try the EQ GE7 in the loop as a boost?

Dr, yeah i did try it but it DEFINATELY colours the sound and the boost is NOT so prominant! For the cash, the MXR was a good choice for me... no need to spend on the Keeley. Hope this helps bud.
