C'mon..yor first tube amp?

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

Some nondescript flat (CD player style) amplifier that was probably an early voice system.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

I got a WEM Dominator when i was a kid in England. The angle-fronted one with 2 x 10" Celestions. What a great amp, the forerunner of the famous Marshall 18 watter.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

Me too!

Mine was a '93. Yours didn't have the ignition key? Probably the most distortion ever to come from a single piece of kit. And the logo lights up! (doubt it was fiber optic or anything, like the Uberschall channel 1-2 strip lights. Wonder how much noise that Ampeg light added?)

2nd tube amp: '93 Ecstasy 1/2 stack

Mine was from about that year, as I recall, though I think I may have purchased it '92. The later ones had purple trim on the faceplate.

As for the ignition key, my amp came with 2 keys and I even got a freebie key ring from Ampeg after I bought the half-stack. The lights behind the logo were simple small bulbs - no fiber optics or LED's.

Paul Gilbert was a huge fan of the VL-series and the story goes that on the day he first tried a VL-1002, he used it that night on stage with Mr. Big. Zakk Wylde was an endorser for a short while and I had the Zakk Wylde/Ampeg poster from that period.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

Marshall JCM 2000 DSL 50

Soon replaced by a Boogie Dual Recto

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

Bought an old Laney 100w head,no name cab and a Dallas Rangemaster from some old Black Sabbath worshipper in the '80s. Went straight to a Soldano within 2 years. Still have the rangemaster. Wonder what they are worth now?

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

About 1971 I had an Airline tube guitar amp, something like this. Don't remember what it sounded like, except that it really distorted when I turned it up.
I would probably really like it now! (I wasn't a guitar player then)
This one's on ebay.
5y3gt rectifier, 6v6 power tube, and 2 12ax7 preamp tubes w/ a Jensen 6' speaker.

TBH I really liked the VL-1002, sriously considered getting one myself...

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

I was late to the tube game, and didn't get one 'til last year. Peavey classic 50 212. Now I can't figure out how I ever managed without one.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

First all-tube amp I bought was a Dual Rectifier solo head in the early '90s... scrimped & saved, cut school and went to Sam Ash in NYC with a wad of cash in my pocket.

Before that I had a Valvestate 2x12 combo which was always blowing up and I was playing my friends amps a lot... one had a Marshall 30th Ann. half-stack; there was a 5150 stack & another friend had a 900 dual reverb which we all hated and he bought without even trying.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

I still don't have one. Kind of peculiar for a tone snob.

I mean, I have one, but it doesn't make any sound as it's in a million pieces right now.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

Peavey Triumph 60. Got it from the shop I was working at for nothing, it didn't work. Took it home, replaced the fuses and bingo, we have ignition! I used that for a while before trading it in towards a 5150.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

O.K. Laugh... My very 1st tube amp was my fathers old webcor tape machine. I pulled it out of the attic and it didn't work? ( I was maybe 13 or 14 ) I pulled all the tubes out,And rode my bike down to radio Shack believe it or not. They had a tube tester there back then. I found the bad tube ( I'm guessing it was a 12AX7) I think it cost me $2.50 for a new one. That was actually a pretty good sounding amp .

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

Mine was a Marshall JCM800 2203, though an early 90's model.

Wasn't a great amp, truth told. Compared it to a friend's early 80's 2204 and his blew mine away. I wanna get my hands on one of those some day.

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

I still don't have one...:(

One day I'll be back here bragging about my first tube amp, lol

Re: C'mon..yor first tube amp?

My first tube amp was a Marshall TSL60 head. Decentish.

My second was a signature 5150. Badly needed a rebias and sounded like crap, but such things were beyond my capabilities at the time.

My third was a Mesa F-30. Gorgeous cleans. Horrible, buzzy, compressed OD.

My fourth was a Mesa Road King head. Some cool tones in there but waaaaaaaaaaaaay too many knobs and switches.

My fifth was a 1st generation Splawn Pro Mod, which I still have and love.

My sixth was a Bogner Uberschall, which was quite cool but had a weird feel I couldn't bond with.

My seventh was an Orange Rockerverb 100, which I also still have and love.

That's the complete tube amp history!
