Thanks :)

Bridge on a Yamaha RGX 1220s. Neck through of maple and mahogany, alder body parts, ebony fretboard and floating trem.

The Custom Five sounded rather thin, compared to the neck PU (original Yam HB - 12k on tall bobbins, and A2 I believe).
I should have known with a guitar like that :oo

The Alnico 8 magnet improved it quite some - more mids, less harsh highs, and a bit louder too.
To further balance the sound, I turned the screw poles on the C8 all the way in, and adjusting the height. It's now 3mm below the high E and 4.5mm on low E.
Now the balance between the neck PU and the C8 is pretty good too.

Re: Custom 8 paradise!

and also does less resistance mean more brightness?
say for example:
both pu's have a rating of 6 for treble
one is 14.4k resistance
another is 16k resistance
which one would be brighter or is this not how things work.
sorry im learning

Re: Custom 8 paradise!

Resistance is not necessarily indicative of a pickups relative brightness. Take a look a the invader, that has around 16k resistance, but with the huge hex pole piece and 3 (yes 3) ceramic magnets, it is very huge in the low end.

Re: Custom 8 paradise!

ok here is my official C8 review! finally got it today. didnt want to put the C5 in and then take everything apart again to put the A8 mag in. so i went straight for forum glory. C8

upon hook up and volume up:
right away it sounded softer than what im used to in a bridge pickup.
upon more riffs and runs i noticed that it compresses a little, it has this open feel to it, if you play really heavy chords the initial attack kinda hides a back for like 2 ms, there is a actual bloom to it. the open power chords and full chords ring all the way through as expected with a A8 mag, but this actually sounds more even across the board compared to the JB8 or Alt8. when i dialed back the gain on the amp to 3 and cranked the volume and striked a indie rock chord before it was a little piercing with the JB and JB8, the Alt8 just sounded dull, this sounds full and polished, like the perfect passive pickup. it stands on the fine of rock and metal, crank the gain on my amp i can achieve very very heavy chords and the lead tone sings very well on the same settings, open and clear with response. dial back the amps gain and it never sounds weak or thin, totally perfect for most style of guitar id assume. even has a suttle twang to it. im glad i finally tried this out, this is what music forums are for, "progression of sound!!"
id say its nearly as aggressive as the JB, but without the mid spike its like what i wanted the JB to be all along. the bass is literally perfect. the mids are as full as you can have on a guitar without sounding too much. the highs are smooth and i dont mean cut off, i mean at the perfect freq for rock and metal its rounds off right at that point! like the perfect eq.
it literally sounds like every aspect of the pickup is in focus. lower mids, upper mids, its all there do to with what you like.
i would say this pickup would be the friendliest pickup to any guitar setup, whatever amp, cab, effects. this would fit right and expand from that point onwards. i didnt need to tweak anything to make my setup sound better, just put this pickup in and got the gain and volume full and powerful. i was thrilled and relieved, cause honestly im tired of reading up on pickups and trying them all out. im set! for a passive pickup, this should be the standard.

clips will be posted soon, ill try to record as much aspects of it as possible for everyone. cleans-mild overdrive-death metal :14:

Re: Custom 8 paradise!

Looking forward to the clips! My Custom 5 just arrived. I have the A8 magnet in waiting, I will put it in only if the Custom 5 seems lacking in any way.

Good description. I always say a bit of vintage sag when I describe, but I like your wording!!

the open power chords and full chords ring all the way through as expected with a A8 mag, but this actually sounds more even across the board compared to the JB8 or Alt8. when i dialed back the gain on the amp to 3 and cranked the volume and striked a indie rock chord before it was a little piercing with the JB and JB8, the Alt8 just sounded dull, this sounds full and polished, like the perfect passive pickup.
My thoughts exactly!!
it stands on the fine of rock and metal, crank the gain on my amp i can achieve very very heavy chords and the lead tone sings very well on the same settings, open and clear with response. dial back the amps gain and it never sounds weak or thin, totally perfect for most style of guitar id assume. even has a suttle twang to it.
I think it can do about everything!!

im glad i finally tried this out, this is what music forums are for, "progression of sound!!"

I take it you like it then?? :friday: It is my fave.. And one thing too, I think it still lets the guitar come thru as well.. In different guitars, it has a similar feel to play, but the character of each guitar is still present.. This is important to me.. I found the TZ and others to dominate

i was waiting for your response yea!!!
im glad you posted the thread to begin with.
and to further your point about it letting the guitars natural tone come through is certainly a fact. it indeed lets my guitar bellow wood into the mix.
which, lets me know i actually have a pretty good guitar cause the wood always sounds full to my ears.

ive been shredding for literally 5 hours now. need to take a break. i really put tones to the test, im crazy about the full sound of this thing.
i dont know what more one would need in a passive unless its super vintage PAF or grind metal. this covers all that ground inbetween.

Re: Custom 8 paradise!

Cool that you noticed what I was saying about the guitar coming thru.. Some people (non players who dont get it) have said that it seems silly to run the same pup in diff guitars..What is the point of having diff guitars? But its cool in that they respond the same, so you dont have to alter your style and the tone feels familiar, but the guitar sounds its own..

Also, you can hear each note in the chord. But sings when shredding too. 5 hours huh?? Awesome!!

As far as starting the thread.. I just wanted to share my excitement about it with everyone. Is SO cool to me how long its gone and how many people seem to dig it.

Enjoy bro and keep rockin! Get those clips up! I dont have any way to record.. Plus Im a hack anyhow..haha
Waiting for me to reply??

Excellent review~! :friday:

Re: Custom 8 paradise!

Damn it. You're right. I guess I should just put the A8 in before I install the C5 and end the charade, like surface54 did.

what did you think of the C5 for that short moment? i wanted to try it but hell i already know it lacks mids and the highs can be bright lol.

Re: Custom 8 paradise!

for a purely informative post, my pu was @ 14.28 with the A8 mag in it out of the guitar.

My short experiment with the the C5 was that it is so void of the proper mids it allmost becomes thin. Actually one of the worst voices ever imo.

A2, A8 are just fine though. It is still really surprising how big a difference some mags can make.
