Re: Do you use Straplocks?

The two best changes to the Schallers are the locking nut, but especially the one piece design of the screw/pin with the hex nut to tighten. It was a pain in the ass when you got the screw down tight on the old design, but the pin was still loose.

I play SGs and 335/339 types these days, so I really need a lock on the pins near the neck. They're all on the back of the guitar, and those let go the easiest.

My guitars all have their own strap, and I've used the plastic disks for a few years, but I'm thinking of the washers now. I don't take my straps off, so they're ready when I open the case. Although, I've certainly drank enough Grolsch to justify using those. :p

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

Almost every one of my guitars has its own strap that stays on all the time (only exception is my Bich which has both pins on the back and won’t fit in the case with a strap attached), so detachable locks hold no interest for me. I’ve been using the d’Addario Planet Waves Elliptical Endpins on everything and been VERY satisfied. Just mount it so that the ends of the “football” are perpendicular to where the slit on the strap would be when you’re wearing the guitar and no problems... unless the strap holes themselves wear out of course.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

No on all but one guitar since I don’t gig
On the guitar that has em it has the dimarzio cliplocks in purple

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

Technically, I do. I mean, my guitar strap has the locks on it, but the guitar that has the strap buttons was stolen, so...

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

So about these super sexy Schaller S-locks:

1) do these have screws that actually fit guitars without needing wood glue and toothpicks like the regular schallers did?
2) are the buttons sold separately anywhere? I have a modest 3 guitars and 1 strap and don't want to buy 3 sets

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

I've only installed one set of the S Locks so far, and the screws fit just fine. But I was so use to having to fill the holes and re-tap them in other guitars with the old model that I wouldn't care.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

Thanks. I'll keep looking for where the pins are sold separately then.

As for the size I emailed schaller. I'm just not going to remake holes on my brand new guitar.

1. According to Schaller, the new pins/buttons will retrofit most guitars and require no modification or toothpicks and glue.

2. Schaller sells all of the components separately, but so far direct from Schaller is the only place I can find them. The pins are like $9.85 US after you take VAT out, but shipping from Germany is somewhat cost prohibitive.

FWIW, I just replaced the stock strap buttons on my Gibson '57 LP RI and the new Schaller buttons went right in, no problem. Interestingly, the stock screws were much longer than the new screw/pin from Schaller. However, it went in smoothly and tightened right down nicely. I can't tell you how nice the new one piece pin/screw is and using the hex head type tool is so much better.

The new lock for the strap is incredibly nice and easy to install. I love the new design. Screw it down finger tight, insert 2mm hex wrench shaft through the slot and tighten down about a quarter turn. Tighten the set screw and you're done. It took me longer to take the stock pins out of the guitar and old Schaller lock out of the strap than it did to install the new stuff.

Oh, and the new locks will work with the old buttons......I tried it just to make sure. The new ones are nice in that they don't rattle like the old ones. They aren't perfectly silent, but close enough.

I ordered the Ruthenium set and the plating is beautiful, along with the color. I'm inclined to go with some of the new colors like Satin Pearl and Ruthenium as a change from standard shiny nickel, but all of the colors look nice. For anything but nickel or chrome eBay is the only place I could find them, other than direct from Schaller. Shipping from Germany was like €30 though. Stupid.

From the Schaller site:

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

From my limited testing, it appears that the new pins are the larger factor is keeping things quiet. I tried the older locks with the new pins and still no noise.

Curious to see if Jeff or Dave have experienced the same.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

I must say, I'm impressed. The originals are a tried and true design that would have continued to sell like hotcakes for years... I wouldn't figure they would even put thought into improving them.. Not only did they show the initiative, looks like they hit it out of the park! I agree with Guitfiddle.. On several occasions I've rounded out the screw heads when Ive had the screw stop and yet the post not all the way down.. These are supposed to be less noisy.. What causes the noise? never noticed mine being noisy, but im 80 % deaf
Plus the color options are cool. Makes me wonder if Dunlop will upgrade now..??

I have mostly always used Dunlops. I always liked the Schallars and liked the fact that even if the pin failed, you still have the security of the "cup" that the guitar pin sits in.. I just mainly chose Dunlop for 2 reasons. first: I bought them first based on a friends recommendation. Second: when I did try the Schallars, I didnt like how the pin stuck out. Made it impossible to put the guitar in the case with the strap on. But, I rarely do that. The problem is, I now prefer the Schallars, especially the new ones, but I have dunlops on most of my guitars and Schallars on 2 and I cant justify the cost of swapping them all to the same system

I can confirm that the NEW locks with the OLD pins are quieter than the entire OLD system. I can also confirm that the OLD locks with the NEW pins are quieter. The OLD locks with the NEW pins seems to be a tighter fit, as I had to use more force to get the strap off the pin. I don't think it will damage anything, but I'll personally try to not mix old and new. I have sufficient straps so that I won't. I'll not be on stage, break a string and suddenly have to mix strap lock systems.

I think the NEW pins do play a large part in making the NEW system virtually silent, but I think the tolerances in the NEW lock are tighter too. Everything about the NEW system is simply better. I'll eventually replace the remaining 4 sets of strap locks that I have. To me, it's worth the money to buy a complete set for each guitar, but I only have 5 keeper guitars with strap locks, so that isn't cost prohibitive.

Hopefully soon there will be a US distributor that will sell the separate components. Then you guys with 20 guitars can just buy a bunch of pins and have 4-5 straps to rotate between guitars. Whatever you do, if you will use or try Schaller, you owe it to yourself to check these new locks out.

What caused the noise was the strap pins themselves rattling around in the locks. They 'thunk' as you move around. The new ones solve that completely. I think they are slightly bigger, so there is no rattling at all. Once you try the new ones, the thunking of the old ones drive you crazy.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

Well just ordered a set. Hoping the buttons come available soon since I'm not going to just buy 3 whole sets

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

Packing the buttons with wax stops the clunk on the old ones.

I have way too many straplocks already to reorder all new locks, but maybe once the updated buttons are available.

Thank you for the info Bro!!

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

IMO, part of the logic of strap locks is in the inadequacy of the buttons. With adequate strap buttons, and care and concern of your straps to ensure the holes do not become loose, the strap lock is actually the lazy mans way out for not taking due precautions and care of his instrument. Think of a skilled surgeon who takes care of his instrument in a highly dedicated way...it is a way of life and carries over to other facets of guitar care and maintenance
No, one does not need strap locks, they are only for the lazy.;and why i do use them btw.
