Re: Do you use Straplocks?

I can confirm that the new S-Lock buttons fit in the old Straplocks (the U channel), and don't rattle. The new S-Lock U-channel fits around the old buttons, although they do rattle.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

Funny you should bring it up. Just this week I decided to put strap locks on all of my guitars but having 14 guitars that needed them and Schallers being $15 per pair I just couldn't see spending over $200 on locks so I went with the cheap Chinese copies from ebay that were $20 for five pair. They're a bit more cheesy than the Schallers but work very well and are perfectly secure. They do rattle a little if you play with them but like the doctor said, "If it hurts when you do that then don't do that". One thing to be aware of is that the Chinese U-Channel will work on the Schaller buttons but not the other way around.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

I found an improvement Schaller missed with their S-Locks. Put bottle openers on the new nut.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

I just installed a set of the S-Locks in my Les Paul yesterday. Huge improvement over the old design, IMO.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

I really like my new Lock-It cotton straps.

Well after some time I really love these things.
Easy on and off and very comfortable.

An added benefit is that if you use wall hangers and you just simply rotate the strap around behind the guitar when you hang it, like most of us do, then the strap's lock-end by the output jack actually holds firm and solid sticking straight back,,,, there-by totally preventing the guitar's body from being knocked against the wall by your drunken cousin or brain-dead monkey-armed bassist.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

The Schaller's allow you to do the same thing with your strap. All my guitars are hanging with their straps.

I absolutely love these new S Locks. Grest design and they are beautiful too. I'll convert each of my guitars slowly from the old deign to the new.

Aren't they? I mean, how long did it take to redesign these things properly? They are a big improvement, with no squeaking and no 'thunks' anymore.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

I have them on a few guitars – all Gibsons.

The Gibson strap buttons were an awful design until fairly recently, when they were significantly enlarged. Actually, it was a beautiful design, cosmetically speaking. But the buttons were just too small.

I have no slippage problem with Fender strap buttons most of the time. If I am using a kind of blown out strap (like the two I've had for 20+ years, or a newer cheap strap that I don't fully trust), I will put Grolsch gaskets on, though.

On the guitars that have them, I use Dunlop Dual Designs...and I don't attach the inserts to the strap ends. I put the strap on as normal, and then put the inserts in, as a backup. Works just as well, provides better strap geometry (strap hugs the guitar body closer), and doesn't dedicate each strap to strap lock equipped guitars only.

I probably wouldn't even bother if those weren't already on there. I put them in 14 years ago, and they're a holdover from back then. I bought two new Gibsons in 2004, and I was paranoid. Nowadays, I'd probably just convert to Fender or G&L style strap buttons on a Gibson, and use Grolsch washers to be safe.

I use the old style thin leather straps on most of my Fenders. Those have tight eyelets that hold on very well, and the eyelets stay tight because I leave the straps attached to the guitars (the eyelets really only wear out from straps being taken off and put on). This keeps the eyelets from blowing out due to frequent attachment and removal of the strap. No locks required in these cases.

Not to mention how easy the installation process is.
I can’t tell you how many times in the past, with the old design I struggled to get the damn nut threaded....
Frustration

Right? How did that make it past product testing? It was difficult with a thin nylon strap, not to mention a thick leather one.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

On my first guitar I actually stictched the strap in a way that it is completely fixed and can't be removed unless the stitches are cut. Did this 11 years ago. I'm not one to change straps but it is still holding very strong, never come undone, no sign that it will be coming off any time soon!

Second guitar, I wish I had strap locks but its something I never really come round to buying, highly recommend either way especially if you play a lot live.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

I just bought a bag of 12 replacement Grolsch washers for $2. Works perfect and covers 6 guitars, and are available in black.

The thing no one has seemed to notice or mention is that if straps themselves were designed better, straplocks would not be necessary. I submit it's poor strap design that is the real problem. Straplocks are just a hack to try and solve strap design problems.

I can agree with this. But it is all a bad design. The stock strap buttons on most guitars are laughable. The way straps connect to guitars are laughable, too. We should demand better from these companies.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

Better designed straps?

Lock-It = better designed straps, just don't judge them by that stupid promo video that proves absolutely nothing.
Their black cottons are great and not that pricey since you can use them with any guitar instead of having to buy standard locks for each guitar individually.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

Planet Waves makes a locking strap. It is nylon, though, and like most nylon straps, it cuts into my neck and shoulder...I like cotton. But the locking mechanism is pretty sweet, and it works well.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

I have one of those Planet Waves straps.
I like it but I don’t love it.
I still prefer the Schaller locks.
