Wow, I'm surprised at how many people hold their pick like that! Then again, if you talk to any classical guitarist, they'll ask you why you even use a pick, or why your guitar's body isn't on your left leg! I dunno, I kind of agree with Dime59Hum on this one. Using a thumb and two fingers reminds me of looking at a person that doesn't know how to play, picking up a guitar. I definitely wouldn't say that to Steve Morse, or any other person who plays just fine using that approach, but I see it as a bad habit that never got broken. I use my middle and ring finger on my right hand to claw, grab notes, and fingerpick, so holding it with 3 fingers sounds foreign to me.

I guess there's more than one way to play a guitar.....ya think?

Perhaps there are some crossed wires here. By saying I (and Steve) use three fingers, I was including the thumb. So my grip is thumb and two fingers to be precise. Using three fingers would be a bit weird.

Let me get a picture to show the disbelievers. Thank you GJ by the way.

his fret tapping hand is arced the same way you would hold a pic with 3 fingers. that "arc" hinders you in speed and could lead to damaged tissue. The constant over stretching required to play that way, an overstretching that your mind has accepted as normal and that you subconsiously except as "part of playing" so you dont feel the stress. Can you play fast and accurately without any fatigue, picking every note, say 16ths at 180 bpm with that hand position? For about 14 minutes? I doubt it (and yes it is possible, just go see some of the solo work that John Petrucci does thats insanely fast and long).

This picture showcases the arc much better.

This next one doesnt show much arc, mainly because I didnt hold the pick correctly for the photo. I didnt adjust my hand as if I had the guitar in my hand, though if I would have you would see a much more noticable arc. NOTE: I had ny hand in the right position, but from months of training not to hold the pick like that, I experienced pain and tension and without my noticing I adjust more towards the traditional technique, yet not quite correctly.

I think some wires have been crossed. The way i hold my pick is in fact my thumb, index, and middle, and there is no unnatural feeling arcing of wrists or anything causing discomfort or lack in speed.

And Dime, judging by your pictures and comments you in fact have little or no idea how i and everyone else in my boat (including Mr.Morse) are holding our picks. Telling us that we are wrong is just dumb...we are different :9:

Its just me trying to prove a point, and I also used both hands since im lefty and used my left and rigt for the pics. If Ihad a video I would show you dudes, but I had that same technique about a year back and I know what it was like. And I know Morse man, I like DP and watch Perihelion almost daily. ;) I know what im saying, but you must get the wrong idea. How about this. F it, lets just jam and have a good time! If its not hurting you and that the most natural position for you, then thats that. It hindered me, and I didnt want the same for any of you guys, thats why I went to the great lengths I did to explain it. I just didnt acknoweledge that everyones mechanics are different. I stand somewhat corrected.

i hold mine like steve morse does. im not trying to copy him but i find i can play sooooo much faster and my playing is was more controlled.

Yeah.

I'm trying to learn how to use just two fingers to help inprove my lead playing, but for heavy riffing and muting I always find myself using three fingers out of habit (plus I can dig in harder).
how would it improve it?

Playing with those 3 fingers is wrong and would only lead to problems in your future. The longer you have been playing like that, the harder it is to break. Use the side of your index, lay the pick on it, and plant your thumb on it, and make a loose fist. Thats the best I can do without giving you a picture. If you think about it, thats the way everyone uses it because its natural to them. Thats why its so hard to break, people fill there heads with crazy ideas about how there "different" and they will adjust to playing that way when its wrong and will hurt you in the long run. And if your guitar teacher holds it like that, I would learn from someone who is more "reputable" if you would say. Does he use tab to teach you? Then you dont need a teacher for that, but thats just me IMO.
are you trying to say steve morse is bad because he has his hand a certain way? um i think its more than an opinion that he was one of the best pickers in the world and i dont nead someone telling me that if my teacher has his hand a certain way that i nead to find someone else. how can it hurt. i think it helps. obvioulsy the better pickers in this world know it helps. dont tell its an inferior way. give me 10 good reasons why.

And no my guitar teacher never teached me from tab, he worded out everything by ear from super fast hammet solos to john fogherty complicated country licks with all sorts of weird bends and stuff that werent in his everyday arsenel...yet he got them spot on. He is one of the best guitarists in the world and would quite happily get up on stage with morse, vai, satriani and co. and sound just as good, even better in some cases in my opinion (not than morse ;) ). And for all those thinking to yourselves "yeah sure", this is no exaggeration. You never know, one day you might all be able to see what im talking about.
i know what you mean. my teacher tony spada is one of the most underrated players. i feal that if he were put up against vai and satcht aht he would kiil them. but people go well if he is so good then why havent i heard of him. i dont know how to respond. i think we are all brainwashed. ha steve morse is the best.

well for classical peices i play with my fingers. for actual picking i use a pick. how does it make them look like they dont know what they are doing. i think for me the the other way around. the "right" to you looks like what every person does and looks like a rip off. and fyi when im sitting down i hold my guitar on my left leg!

steve holds his hand wrist at a 90 degree angle for fast picking. and haveing TALKED TO HIM ABOUT THIS he tells me he using three for the pick support and hid pinky for hand support and he tucks his ring finger under because it gets in the way. he tells me its better to have your hand turned paralel with the strings and i think his reason is way better than yours.

Re: Does anyone else hold their pick with three fingers (thumb, index and middle finger)?

Re: Does anyone else hold their pick with three fingers (thumb, index and middle finger)?

Thumb & side of index normally, although, I've noticed that I sometimes use the thumb & side of middle finger, with the index to change the angle. I use that rounded triangle pick from Fender (346, I think), so changing the position of the pick within that thumb/middle finger side realm, changes the angle of attack, which works better for me if I'm picking fast.

Dude, those pictures are as big as a movie theater screen!

Would you guys tell me I was holding the pick wrong if I picked with the pick between my teeth and fretted the notes with my right toes? Ha Ha.
