uhh, how do you do finger tapping with 3 fingers on your non-fret hand & not drop the pick, if you hold the pick with 3 fingers? Ive been watchin vai too much...

Re: Does anyone else hold their pick with three fingers (thumb, index and middle finger)?

i use a flat pick between my thumb and index fingers and the other three for finger picking. The guys that get me are the ones like Brent Mason that use a thumb pick and four fingers. how the hell do they do that!

On a serious note though, i just find it more controlled with the third finger, and thats not to say that it doesnt come off every now and then depending on what sort of sound im trying to get from my pick, but generally it feels more controlled.

I originally started with three fingers but found it limiting when it came to fast picking so I went to two. I also use like a 'fist' grip for real fast tremelo picking.

The thing is now, I never stick to one grip! It's almost constantly changing. This doesn't seem to affect my playing though, I play with my fingers also so I'm pretty quick at altering grip and also 'hiding' the pick.

i always hide it in between my middle and index finger. it like goes ther naturaly after im done playing. im getting pretty good at putting it there when it comes time to finger pick or tap.

Re: Does anyone else hold their pick with three fingers (thumb, index and middle finger)?

I hide it with my ring and little finger in a 'crook' fashion. I think this is what VH used to do or still does (+ various other players).

Hell, sometimes I'll put it there and forget about it! I'll nip down the shops and try to get my wallet only to realise I've still got a pick crooked in my hand!!!

Like I said after I talked to Young Angus about it, everyone is different. No need to be snobby about it Yes-Fan. I know what im saying, and Morse is good, but I wouldnt agree that he is "ThE BeSt AhAHAH" like you said. I was merely trying to help everyone out until you had to get rude. People like you cant appreciate nothing, and you have to jump on me for one little thing that wont matter a week from now. I wanted to help everyone, help you, help Young Angus, but if it works for you, so be it. You dont need to get so defensive. Take your Ritalin, and if you want i'll remove my posts so you wont continue to cry. So much for getting a point across and trying to help YOU. :smack:

Woah cool it kiddies!!!

The way you hold the pick is merely a means to an end. Providing the end result is OK what's the bother? If you can't play something due to your pick grip then either a) change your grip or b) don't play it! It's a trade off with whichever way you hold your pick.

I have to say that if I was learning all over again, I would learn to play thumb and index finger. But hindsight is wonderful and I can't undo 7 years of habit at a whim - and neither do I want to!

PS: Did anybody mention how Van Halen holds his pick with his thumb and middle finger when tremelo picking? Doesn't he bend his wrist to a right angle and attack the string from slightly below?

There are successful professional players everywhere that hold their picks in as many different ways as the people on this forum and all over the world.

So each to their own...and lets just PLAY :headbang:

The strongest (but not necessarily most "coordinated") grip your hand can produce with only two fingers is by using your thumb, and middle finger, like Edward Van Halen.

He lays his first finger in there for support at times, but when he hummingbird-picks, he's using his strongest digits (his thumb and middle finger), therefore DECREASING the tension created in his hand, and then he "flutters" his wrist above the string.

I've seen him play with his thumb & first finger as well. Probably just depends on his mood/conditioning.

I'm only bringing this up as it relates to remarks regarding "tension", etc.

Wow, I'm surprised at how many people hold their pick like that! Then again, if you talk to any classical guitarist, they'll ask you why you even use a pick, or why your guitar's body isn't on your left leg! I dunno, I kind of agree with Dime59Hum on this one. Using a thumb and two fingers reminds me of looking at a person that doesn't know how to play, picking up a guitar. I definitely wouldn't say that to Steve Morse, or any other person who plays just fine using that approach, but I see it as a bad habit that never got broken. I use my middle and ring finger on my right hand to claw, grab notes, and fingerpick, so holding it with 3 fingers sounds foreign to me.

I guess there's more than one way to play a guitar.....ya think?

yes there is, and people like wes montgomery create new styles & tones with "bad-habbits". everybody's different and yes there are some habbits that slow people down, BUT they probably just don't know what's comfortable to them, and then there are those of us that have natural talent & those of us who practice too much for too little progress but still get along. Anyway as for how I play I usually use a two finger grip and when i do rhythm now i usually strum down and use the top of my nail & pickup and every once and a while i'll get some skin scraped. When i play acoustic I almost never use a pick.

Using 3 fingers is like holding a pen. It just came naturally, AND it frees up my index finger for harp harmonics and tapping if I'm feelin' saucy!!
