Dunlop Jazz Picks...Jazz IIIs...Tonal Findings

STRATDELUXER97

Stratoblaster Tone Meister
Hi all...Happy New Year! I haven't posted to the forums for awhile, but wanted to share some Jazz III tonal findings. The picks were all played on my Tele and without an amp..

Like alot of you guys,I'm constantly working on my picking technique.Several years ago I switched from using the 351 style picks over to the red dunlop Jazz IIIs..When I made the switch,I immediately noticed an improvement in speed and note articulation.I just can not go back to using the larger picks these days,as it makes my picking technique feel kinda clumbsy...

I was pretty intriqued with the Eric Johnson version of this pick and so at the same time I also bought the new Petrucci Jazz IIIs...The versions I listened to were the red Jazz III,Black Stiffo,Max Grip red,Eric Johnson,The red XL,The JP,and the yellow Ultex..I have to say that EJ really does have phenomenal ears and his picks I really like..So here's what I hear/found guys..Will try to keep it short and sweet...

I've also ordered some of the new Planet Waves Blue Nylopro Jazz picks..These might be nice also..They look like they just came out at the end of 2013..

The regular red Jazz III...I have been using this pick for an awful long time and it's nice..It's a little harder to grip, has a smoother surface, but I used it as a baseline..Smooth overall tone, not real snappy sounding..The smaller size of these has really helped my picking speed and articulation..

Red EJ Pick..Love this one...Just got some recently..Not snappy, tone very similar to the red Jazz III above..Easier to grip with slightly more raising of the lettering on the pick..Seems like this pick offers a bit more mids and is just slightly beefier sounding overall..I've read where some players say this pick is slightly larger than the regular red Jazz IIIs but I don't see it? Maybe my Jazz IIIs are from the earlier ones that EJ wanted re-molded?

Black Stiffo...Don't like it..The tone is dull, loss of note detail, and this pick feels thicker..Even from day 1 I always liked the red Jazz IIIs over this one..

Yellow(See through) Ultex...Also a softer, duller tone to me..Harder to hang onto, slippey, smooth surface overall..Don't care for this one and never have used them..

Red Max Grip....Snappy,plastic type tone..The tone is thinner and brighter, good overall note definition and I Like these on my LP or a guitar that has an overall darker tone..Took me awhile to get used to the gripping surface, but a decent pick..The std.Jazz III red is not as bright and an overall mid ground tone with the series..

The new Petrucci Black pick...This is my favorite already...A bit larger than the std.Jazz III series but not as large as a 351 series pick..These picks seem to glide effortlessly across the strings..Nice snap in the tone, overall full and beefier sound because of it's larger size..Comfortable pick to hold and use..Great pick for chording and lead playing..This is a great pick and well worth trying guys!

Red Jazz III XL....Great for acoustic guitar chording..Reminds me of the black stiffo in tone but maybe just a little brighter..Bigger pick overall and the size these days bothers me and so I find I don't use these!

I Like the JP pick with it's really nice buffed edges and how smooth it feels over the strings..I Like it's slightly larger size and it's tone..It's a brighter pick then the EJ,but it's the one I'd pick now if I could only pick one..

The EJ is my second fav and I Love this pick because it's not as snappy, has a nice overall feel and it's the size I'm used to for alot of years..It edges out the std.red Jazz III..

John,

Great review! I'm going to check them out.

I switched to D'Andrea Delrex a while ago, and they're pretty nice. Like a larger version of the old Fender Jazz picks I used to use.

Re: Dunlop Jazz Picks...Jazz IIIs...Tonal Findings

Thanks guys...The JP picks are really nice..I Like the size and they feel so smooth across the strings while picking...The new Planet Waves picks are a nice color..Maybe they will be great picks also?

Re: Dunlop Jazz Picks...Jazz IIIs...Tonal Findings

Red Jazz 3s for cleans

Jazz III 2.0's for metals

I am really interested in the Petucci's.

I think the Jazz IIIs are 1.38 mm..Haven't used the 2.0s? Are these also the black Jazz picks? Don't have any the carbon fiber ones either.

I haven't used either of the two you mention Jeff..Was a diehard Fender celluoid 351 user for many years...And some of the same sized dunlop variations of the 351..I'm so used to the smaller Jazz pick dunlop though now...Hard to switch!

Re: Dunlop Jazz Picks...Jazz IIIs...Tonal Findings

I mainly stick with Jazz III's with the occasional trip down memory lane with the larger regular sized/shaped picks. However, Jazz III's always seem to call me back. I like the occasional Jazz I to get less aggressive attack/tone.

Re: Dunlop Jazz Picks...Jazz IIIs...Tonal Findings

Welcome back, stranger! I assume someone was finally able to scrape up bail money?

Re: Dunlop Jazz Picks...Jazz IIIs...Tonal Findings

I've been using Jazz picks for years but I tried the JP picks when they came out and I've not looked back since. I love that they're just a bit bigger than a regular jazz pick but not by much. It's great for pickslides, which I have a hard time doing with most jazz picks.

Holy crap I've been looking for JP picks on the cheap but I've never found anything better than $18 for 36 of them. Thanks a bunch, John!

The JP picks are really awesome...You're welcome..Glad the website helped..I've bought quite a few items from them..Their prices are good and stuff ships quick! I've bought 3 Snark tuners from them for myself and as gifts also..Cheapest prices I've seen was from them.

If you don't like how slippy the red Jazz IIIs are, take a pocket knife and scrape the crap out of the top of the pick. You'll get great grip. I've been doing this for years now.

These are new Planet Waves Jazz picks which I've ordered and haven't received yet...These might be nice also..

Was going to suggest you give them a shot after reading your first post and I see you already ordered them. I too am a big fan of the Jazz III and have tried every variation of it and even the Jazz I and II for kicks. I like the tone of the red III and red max grip III best since it's a bit warmer than the black ones and carbon fiber ones and has a tiny bit more flex to it, so I stick with those. You'll find the blue D'Addario's are half way between a regular Jazz III and a XL Jazz III in size and the tone is half way between the black and red Jazz IIIs in terms of how bright They sound on the strings. They also slip over the string nice so they may be a contender for you since the Petrucci was your favorite.

Re: Dunlop Jazz Picks...Jazz IIIs...Tonal Findings

I tried the max grip J3s, and within five minutes, threw them all away. It's good to have grip, but when you get them in the wrong position, it's really hard to get them back in line because they don't slide. With the regular J3s, I can adjust them back to how I like.

Re: Dunlop Jazz Picks...Jazz IIIs...Tonal Findings

It's all good.

For me, the Jazz III XL's work best. I think it's just one of those things.

I encourage people to try different picks. I'm surprised, in fact, that Musicians Friend or whoever else doesn't offer a "one of every pick we sell" package :-)

Re: Dunlop Jazz Picks...Jazz IIIs...Tonal Findings

Nice writeup Jon.

I have a few of the red j3 and black stiffos in my pick pile. My findings are pretty much the same on those..def prefer the reds. But overall I just cannot gel with those little picks. In fact as I get older, I am preferring bigger picks...the rounded triangles. I am sure much of that has to do with my CTS. As my fingers get numb/weak, those little jazz picks go flying more often ;) I am experimenting with some shark fins now.

Have you tried the Big stubby picks? Those things are crazy!

I messed with the Planet Waves pick vs the JP pick..Both picks are almost the exact same size and larger than the std.Jazz III sizings...The JP pick is just more articulate, has a slight snap that I Like, and it's almost like there's slightly more midrange content when using the JP..I still have to get used to the larger sized JP pick, but it's the best one out of all the picks I've played lately..The blue Planet Wave Nylpro feels like a larger version of the regular Jazz III to me..But it has a duller overall sound compared to the JP pick..I Love D'Addario and use their American Stage cables, their strings..and my sister in law lived right around the around the D Addario plant..LOL....The JP hands down just wins for me!

Planet Waves Nylpro,Eric Johnson Jazz 3, John Petrucci...L to R

Hi buddy...Haven't tryed the stubby picks..I'm just so used to the size and feel of the Jazz IIIs..Its hard to switch away from these after playing on them for so long! Currently I still love the red EJ Jazz III and these new Petrucci Dunlop picks.
