I liked Malmsteen's tone in the early years, so he's the one that I voted for in this poll, but the one that I really like that wasn't mentioned is Vernon Reid.

Yeah, the guitar tones on Mean Street, and Hot For Teacher have been killing me for years. Everytime I think I've heard somebody's tone that I absolutely love, I go back to those VH tunes and love the sounds even more.

I have to agree that Satriani has awesome tone . . . IMO he blew away Johnson and Vai in the G3 tour that I've got on DVD . . . I'm not really a huge fan of shred, but Satch sounded good enough that I wanted to listen to what he was playing . . .

Alex Scholnick's stuff with Testament was my favorite shredding style solo work. Check out his long solo on the song "Practice What you Preach." AMAZING technique and very well structured. Tone was pretty good.

I always thought Marty Friedman's tone was pretty good for his style of playing too.

I really used to love Rocky George's tone too - check out How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today album....

Id have to say petrucci, in that out of those guys his tone is the one i would pick if i could choose one.

But overall my favourite tone from a fast player would be steve morse!

steves tone is one of my faveorite tones EVER!!

Petrucci got my vote. I think he gets great tones.

Some one (Jokingly I believe ) mentioned George Lynch. I actually like his sound. You hear it you know it's Lynch.

Of the ones you listed, I'll say Van Halen has my fav tone. The rhythm guitar in Beautiful Girls is a good example. For a lead tone, So This is Love.

A shredder not on your list whose tone I really like is George Lynch.

Ed's early tones sit at the top of the hill for me. I'm also a huge fan of George Lynch's various tones over the years. Greg Howe's early tone is sort of a cool hybrid of both those guys.

I saw Yngwie a few years ago and he had a killer strat/marshall tone.

I admire Satch as a player but have never really liked his tones. I got the G3 dvd not long ago and his tone on that is just awful. Vai has a very unique sound, but I liked it better on the first Roth record than anything he's done since.

Not a fan of Petrucci's tone. Sort of a more metal Morse tone. Morse is another player who is amazing but whose tone doesn't do it for me, though I saw him recently with DP and he sounded better than I thought he would.

As for the worst tones of the shredder era, maybe early Richie Kotzen (he REALLY got his act together later though) or Jason Becker.
