Re: Favorite Amp Brand

I just noticed Puckboy's Overbuilt, which is a byproduct of Matchless.
To this day, the most amazing sounding combo I've heard is another byproduct of Phil Jamison from Matchless....a Jamison Amp. Nobody knows EL-84 amps like Mark Sampson and Phil Jamison.

Oh yeah, and one more exceptional amp I forgot....the 65 Amps London, which is owned by Dan Bouhl and Pete Stroud from Cheryl Crow. Dan learned how to make the ultimate EL-84 Vox/Marshall hybrid by hanging out on the now defunct 18watt.com

Re: Favorite Amp Brand

Well...it is a prototype...and will probally not be anything else but a one of a kind amp, but I really really like the Rooster 55 that our resident tubeamp wiz has made, it is a blend between a Marshall and a Hiwatt, and the bright and normal channel is blendable...on a 4x12 cab it is huge!!
On its own with a GT-75 it is nice and warm?? What gives?? I dislike that speaker in other setups, but that amp makes it work!
Otherwise I like Marshall from back then....
Same with Hiwatts.

Haha I remember that hellraiser of a amp.. The infamous Hischall.. Would love to hear it someday :D

Re: Favorite Amp Brand

For me, Marshall is the number 1 amp.

Nothing sounds quite like a mid-range, that warm but aggressive midrange snarl. And they rocked the world for a good 3decades and will do it again someday, I am sure :)

Re: Favorite Amp Brand

I voted "Fender," but this poll is 100 times tougher than the guitar poll. It's really a nineteen-way tie for first place.

Put Rick Seccombe right there with Phil & Mark :bigthumb:

I've had 3 Overbuilts & they are all phenominal amps....and Rick is a super nice guy to chat with !!!! :beerchug:

Re: Favorite Amp Brand

Mesa Boogie - the manufacturer of IMO the best bass amps around.

Yeah, I'd love to have an M-pulse 600 or a Big Block 750 with one of those Roadready 6x10's. Big balls to the walls tone but just not as big, bulky and heavy as an 8x10. An 8x10 probably wouldn't even fit in the back of my car, even though it's a stationwagon.

I always dig the live tone of that bass player with Incubus with his M-pulse 600 and Roadready cabs.

Still, my next bass amp will probably be an EBS.

Re: Favorite Amp Brand

ENGL ,Diezel ,Bogner ,Matamp and Cornford are the ones for me.
Marshall...Lack of quality and soul
Boogie ,Too loose and boomy for my tastes
Fender...I play hi-gain

ENGL fitts the bill for me...If you go MIDI ,nothing is like ENGL!even the Single ,two channel models are extreme good sounding ,even played master vol on 2! My fav Rythm tone is typical ENGL drive!
Bogner does my fav. lead tone.No need for explanation
Cornford does one of the best allrounders. The mkII is a simple ,yet powerfull amp!
MATAMP is custom ,so you can get everything! It's tempting to create your own voice!
And Diezel....Well it's hard to describe.Play one ,and get ready to melt down!

Re: Favorite Amp Brand

I got one of the nicest clean tones ever out of a Tone King, so I wouldn't mine owning one of those. I have yet to play a Diezel.

I'll second the London. I've just done two very different recording dates with the London, and it's a killer amp with two very distinct, usable tones. I'm dying to try the higher wattage 65s soon. The 65 guys really know how to voice an amp. Sounds great on the floor and on tape.

There are so many great makers out there right now, but I'll mention one brand that impacted my life positively: Victoria. Mark Baier makes outstanding amps. My double deluxe is a joy. If I had the money, I'd drop it on half a dozen Vics, including the regal, victoriette, tweed twin and bandmaster. Every Vic I've tried has sounded magical. Mark Baier is to tweed what Mark Sampson is to Vox.

Props to Splawn, Carr, Matamp, Soldano and Top Hat, too. All great makers.

As far as production line stuff goes, I've really liked the new Hiwatt high gain 50, the Orange rockerverb 50 (4x6V6) and the mesa roadster. All cool amps.

I'm hanging out to hear the suhr badger, div13 and bogner...

Re: Favorite Amp Brand

Fender hands down, yeah Bogner, Matchless, Two Rock, Koch, ect, ect are all good and sound great but looking at it realisticly. How many of us can afford one of these amps? I'm pretty sure not many of us, Fender IMO is the ulitmate marriage of tone and price. Great tone, all other clean tones are measured against Fender's.

As I've said before, I'd rather have a great clean tone to serve as a platform on which to build my tone on, than a few ok tones that other amps provide. Plus with the prices of Fenders being half or less of other Boutique amps, I really don't see why I would want to drop my hard earned cash on amps that even professional musicians have to admit are way overpriced.
