Favorite Amp / or cab you've owned

Yeah, I know, pretty much a total free for all question, but I had to ask. I did a quick search, and didn't see anything right off ( like I spent a lifetime looking ), so I felt it was fair game to ask. Obviously, I have my own answers, which I will force upon you, or I wouldn't have inquired.

I picked up this Mesa F-30, and keep putting it on my reissue Marshall 4X12 1960AHW with Enlish made Celestion G12H-30's, and I keep wondering if it's possible that there's anything better out there.

I know you guys feel the same about some of your gear. Pray tell.

Carvin Legacy Halfstack - my current rig. Though i do sometimes wish I had my JCM800 combo back.

Re: Favorite Amp / or cab you've owned

My friend has a white tolex JMP from the seventies that was owened by the dude from T&T, i was so pissed when I plugged into it thinking "oh well, probobly not gonna do anything special, I mean - I have the ultimate metal amp JCM2000" - right, my jaw dropped my JCM2000 was a freaking 15 watt transistor box comparing to that thing. Obviously my friend will never sell it ....

Re: Favorite Amp / or cab you've owned

OK, in the first couple of posts we have two Carvin Legacies. I'm suspicious that there might actually be something to it.

Re: Favorite Amp / or cab you've owned

My Marshall JCM900 MkIII head. I love that thing. Sadly, it needs a new power transformer. It'll be a little bit still before it's fixed. If I could afford to snag up all the MkIII's I come across I probably would...LOL.

Re: Favorite Amp / or cab you've owned

My favorites amps that I've ever owned:

1. Blackface Fender Deluxe Reverbs with Celestion G12H-30 speakers
2. Blackface Fender Vibrolux Reverb with original Jensen C10N speakers
3. Matchless Chieftan with Celestion speaker
4. Fender 5e3 tweed Deluxes with Celestion Alnico Blue 12" speaker
5. Fender '51 tweed Super with one original Jensen P10R and one original jenson C10N

Those are the amps I own that I will never ever sell...

I did own a Vox AC-30 that was as great an amp as any I've owned...but I sold it because it was to loud and to heavy.

My favorite cab is a two 12 Matchless with a pair of mid 60's Celestion Alnico Blue 12's...I use it with my Matchless SC-30 when I want it to sound more like that Vox AC-30 I just mentioned.

For years of great service, I submit my Blue Angel head. Best cab it has seen isn't a cab as such: the two eminence alnico 10 reissues in my custom vibrolux reverb. I've also had a great time with a Matamp Green quad with G12H30s.

I'm also pretty over the moon about my Victoria Double Deluxe.

I really enjoyed my Mesa/Boogie DC-10 head with Mesa Vertical 2X12 cabinet.

I find no fault with my Legacy 4-12 with greenbacks, other than its size. Every time I go to sell it to downsize, I can't do it.

So what's the story on the different celestions they're using in the legacy cabs nowadays?

Yeah... that cab is a bear to haul around but it's such a damn good cab!!!

For the first production run the Legacy cab used Celestion Greenbacks -I've actually opened up a few early production cabs and seen them in there with my own eyes. But after a months or two Vai changed his mind and ever since then they've had V30's in there. I recall the amp being introduced in 2000, I think?

wow, he changed 'em that quick? I ordered one right when they came out since I was in need of a cab and the price was right. i never opened mine up, but i remember it did come with greenbacks.

Yeah... I get Carvin catalogs in the mail and I only remember one or two catalogs listing the amp with Greenbacks.

I've played both. Either way with a hot set of tubes that amp's and it's cab are killer! It's a great platform for V30s. You have the Legacy head as well?

Oh yeah sorry for the hijack... pleez continue. :D

Re: Favorite Amp / or cab you've owned

Amp: My Engl Sovereign 100 combo. It's the perfect all-style tone monster. I love it even more than my Powerball.

Cab: My Engl Pro 4x12" Cabs with V30s. Very solid and they deliver the tone i want

Re: Favorite Amp / or cab you've owned

Wow! Rough question. For what tone? My El Diablo, Deluxe Head and Traynor Bassmate are three that do very different things I love them for in my case. The Pro Reverb (Pro Tube) does the Blackface clean great for me. THe Blues Jr. is a great work horse.

Re: Favorite Amp / or cab you've owned

lets see I really like my POD XT and I am using my Behringer amp for practice, still on the lookout for a good tube amp to end this GAS!!

p.s. I really really like B2D's legacy half stack!!

Re: Favorite Amp / or cab you've owned

I haven't owned many amps, but my 5150II and Avatar 2x12 cab w/ V30's is pretty cool.

Re: Favorite Amp / or cab you've owned

1976 Fender Princeton Reverb
and
1967 Fender Super Reverb (great amp, if you can lift it without getting a hernia)

These are the amps I have, and I like them.

Re: Favorite Amp / or cab you've owned

I really love my DIY blue mutant - it's perfect for the (little bit of) playing I do at this point in my life. But as far as "real" amps I've owned, I think my favorite was my JMP 2203 combo. I started as a new head 4x12 cab. When I got sick of lugging the quad box around, I bought a used 50 watt combo and swapped in the 2203 chassis, then added a pair of EVM-12L's. That amp was just awesome.

Later I downsized again to what is probably my second favorite of all - a JCM800 4010 single-12 50-watt combo. That little amp is about the optimal combination of portability and raw power.
