Finally got my Taylor!

Alright! So, after I visited my local taylor dealer and talked a lot with him, we deceided on a price including taxes for a 414, no cutaway, no electronics. I then waited a couple of weeks to think it over. The major down sides were that I wouldn't get to play the guitar before buying it (I know that if I didn't like it he might have taken it back but...) and the fact that I would spend most of the money I kept for hard times between the end of my master degree and me finding a job (I could've used this money to put a bigger cashdown on a car next year)....

So, last week-end I was in Montreal to play an acoustic show (which turned out to be two shows in two days) in a huge private party and in a bar downtown. So the day before I went to a shop to grab a couple packs of strings and deceided to have a peek in the acoustic room. Well, turns out they had one of these 414 without cutaway and electronics. I played it for maybe 20 minutes :32:, took a look at the price tag and then started talking with the salesman. I was able to get him to sell it 300$ lower than the other guy, include the taxes and include a couple extra things like a humidifier and such... I really got a good deal on this thing compared to what I would've paid here in Qc....

Only bad thing: I asked him what gauge strings were on it and he said medium/light... I came home and took a look at the taylor Website only to find out that they STRONGLY advise you to use light strings on there, being concerned with the solid top being pulled too hard by heavier gauges... I could've made a mistake if I wouldn't have double checked so the store got a minus for that...

Anyways, I played this thing a home and man does it sound beautiful! I really really love that ovankol wood, it is pretty close to rosewood but with just a little more caracter, still very warm but with a little more sparkle to it... I'm in love, this will be one heck of a guitar for years to come for me....

I'll try to post some pics tonight....

Just felt like sharing....

awesome man...

you can NEVER go wrong with a Taylor!!!

Re: Finally got my Taylor!

Nice guitar! Taylors play so great, especially if you have the saddle nice and dialed in.
I wouldn't worry about the strings, unless they're larger than 12's. I guess the rule is 11's for light handed players, and 12's for more aggressive players.

Thanks Jonesey! I was only worried since the indications on the site said to avoid medium strings in regard to heavier string pull on the bridge... I must admit that I'm not the biggest expert on solid top acoustic guitars... I'm reading everything they wrote about humidification and temperature changes (I'm in a relatively humid climate with huges difference in temperature between summer and winter)....

Pics coming up tonight....

Re: Finally got my Taylor!

I've never met a Taylor I didn't like.

Nice score.. get those pics up! :32:

Re: Finally got my Taylor!

There you go... The pics don't do this wood justice, it's almost green.... :32:
I had problems uploading the pics... I had to rotate some of them so they would fit in the format...

Re: Finally got my Taylor!

nice guitar man

I wouldn't worry about the mediums on it either. Pearl Jam uses Taylors on tour and what they love about them is they are very resilient in different tunings, sring guages, and temperatures. They rave about how they haven't given them any issues while they tour.

Re: Finally got my Taylor!

After loving a Taylor 314 C (without electronics) for over a year, I just had to change something. So I got some fancy bridge pins with abalone dots from StewMac and cut slots just big enough for each string... :D There's nothing more to do except get better at playing it.

I hope you enjoy your Taylor at least half as much...

Chip

Re: Finally got my Taylor!

i have a '98 814ce and ive been using 13's on it since i bought it and havent had any problems. i think the bigger strings really help to fill out the bottom end

Re: Finally got my Taylor!

Thanks for the input guys!

mrf- Thanks again for your input back then... I just love this one that's for sure!
fresh- This is such a nice guitar I'm already stoked and hope I will be for a long time... It sound soooo good it's really a treat to write songs with this thing...
Jeremy- Thanks a lot for the info... Maybe I took the taylor website a little too seriously: I have a tendency to pamper my stuff too much when it's new, especially when it's worth that much... ;)

Re: Finally got my Taylor!

Oh my, what is the wood on the back of that? It looks really nice!

Great job on the purchase, makes me want one.

I agree...I use mediums on my Taylor. They sound better and I have had zero problems. Mine is at least 8 years old by now. It does spend alot of time in open D or open G, but I tune it to standard tuning most of the time. Lew

The backs and sides are made of a wood called Ovankol... The description says it's reminescent of rosewood but slightly brighter....

I played a couple guitars with rosewood backs and sides and that description seems to hold up... It is a very warm wood (really comparable to rosewood) but with a touch more mids and highs. The taylors being really reasonnant through the whole spectrum (some say bright), the warmth of this wood makes it really really well balanced...

That wood looks almost greenish in person... sooo nice.... :)

Lew- Thanks for the input... I guess a worry a little too much ;)

Re: Finally got my Taylor!

Surge dude! Congrats on the catch! Looks like a fine chunk of wood!! I really like the back! You should play it backward :laugh2: :laugh2:

I'll soon be on the market for an acoustic too... need a 12-string for "Wish you were here" .... know what I mean ? ;)

Ahhhh yeah... Nice chunk of wood indeed... I wish I could hang it on the wall with the back facing forward too... :) or that the case (where it spends most of its time) was a see through or something... :smack:

There are tons of great twelve strings out there... that should be fun to shop for...;)

Yeah, a buddy here might be selling is brand-spanking new Fender 12-strings he won...

.... here's a scoop : 1-2 times a year, Fender is running a "sales contest" thru their various dealers, the vendors accumulate "Fender Points" that they can exchange for some Fender (and their associated brands) gear.... amps, guitars, accessories.. whatever!! Dont be surprised if your local music store is trying only to "push" fender these days!! :laugh2:

My great buddy and guitarmate in the band caught a '52 RI Telecaster, 1-piece ash body, light and sooooo resonant... a real wonderful piece tagged 2000$ CAD!!
