Gibson M-III Returns!

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

The old Nighthawks came with an NSX single coil; this MIII has a Dirty Fingers. The mounting is the same but whether the pups are is another question.

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

It'd be cool to compare the tone of the poplar-bodied originals with these mahogany-bodied new ones. I wonder if the switching will be the same, with the push-pull replacing the micro-switch. IIRC position 5 had nothing connected when it was in one position...

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

The original Nighthawk is really a cool creature. The ones they make today aren't the same beast.

These look interesting and I like all the colors, but for that price it better come with three groupies.

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

do you think dirty fingers in neck will have too much outpout compared to sh1 or is it good?

i like this guitar

Uh-oh. It's the Eighties all over again. :smack:

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

I think the new ones look better than the originals with the tortoise shell pickguard. milkbone's original looks great though.
I think it looks great in that Candy Cola orange finish.

About single coils in guitars with humbuckers - maybe Gibson voiced this single coil to sound right in a guitar with a 500k volume pot. I remember Hamer took that into account in their 80's guitars with their Hamer Slammer single coils. Typical Strat pickups wired to a 500k volume pot always sound ice picky, thin, and brittle.

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

Hmm I like the green one!! So, Gibson seems to be really pushing the Dirty fingers these days.. They desirable?

I played an '84 Explorer with them and they churned out great classic '80s metal grind (especially through a Marshall!!), although they were a bit more feedback prone than some high gain pickups (I believe the early ones may not have been wax potted). I think the Gibson 500T/496R combo is better, although I'm sure Gibson has updated the Dirty Fingers to be less microphonic.

Not mine, alas.

Well, only way to find out if these new ones are any good is to play one; we can discuss all day what we (don't) like from a couple of pictures. I'd guess that the colours look different in real life than these Photoshopped images on Gibson's website.
