Gibson M-III Returns!

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

Hmm, they've changed the specs somewhat - mahogany body, Dirty Fingers, OFR, coil split in tone control - but they look good, nice colours. Would be interested in giving one a whirl for sure.

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

I liked the wiring in the originals so it would be interesting to hear the available tones, especially the single-coil options which were great with the old wiring. The old ones had poplar bodies too IIRC, can't remember what the necks were made of...

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

^^ Yes poplar bodies; necks were maple on the old ones too.

Forum bro milkbone has a rare HH variant with reverse headstock.

These were cool, but if I wanna go that route in Gibson, sign me up for a US1.

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

I don't like the proprietary single coil in the middle. How are you supposed to replace that one?

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

Looks like it is built in a similar way to those DiMarzios on the original Parkers where there appear to be two screws between the outer four pole pieces.
Not really difficult to replicate but it's probably gonna be a job for the SD Custom Shop, can't see them being popular enough to merit a production model.

But regardless, whoever uses the middle SC on its' own or in fact cares enough about the way it's voiced when it's combined with either humbucker to go to all the trouble of changing it out in the first place?

Anyway, looks cool enough to rock if given the chance but no way am I paying 2000$ or so for one (ok, it IS MSRP but I still can't see it going for appreciably less).
(As a side note, and to think how certain people b!tch and moan about how they can't see how a Strat or Tele or variations thereof can possibly cost anything above 1000$ whereas the far more complicated nature of the LP design can in fact justify the 2500$...)

Wow, I never knew there was a Gibson version of this guitar. I always used to see the ads for the Epiphone version in Circus magazine in the early 90's.

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

Ah I love those! Cool to see they're back.

That green one immediately caught my eye.

But yeah that's weird about the middle single. Hope it's good!

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

Hmm I like the green one!! So, Gibson seems to be really pushing the Dirty fingers these days.. They desirable?

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

I think that middle singlecoil is the same one as used in the Nighthawk. If SD saw the need to produce a slanted humbucker for the Nighthawk, maybe they'll produce the singlecoil as more Gibson guitars start using them. Honestly, they look like a humbucker coil with screws through the holes that the bobbin mounts to the pickup winder. They probably wind it normally and then bore out those holes a tiny bit for a small screw to fit through. I wonder if it really is a Custom Shop job or if it could be done to any regular humbucker coil.

P.S. I have one of the original Gibson Nighthawks, hence the info I provided. Truthfully, it actually is a really good pickup in the Nighthawk. It might just be perfect in the M-III too!
