Gibson SG Zoot Suit

Re: Gibson SG Zoot Suit

Oh, you have got to be kidding me. The picture of the back of the neck - it's craptacular plywood that looks like it has no grain filler & a really sloppy stain/paint job.

AWFUL!

Re: Gibson SG Zoot Suit

Lets all look on the bright side, at least Gibson doesn't make guitars out of MDF......NOT YET!

Re: Gibson SG Zoot Suit

I wouldn't be caught dead playing any of them and I love SG's.

Sure, glue makes everything stronger but dang..

+1. Is this a way for them to gradually get us to except their whole product line being made out of plywood? And while glue holds the layers together tightly, it doesn't help the string vibration trasmit thru the wood. Can't imagine these have much tone quality. But then maybe the target market is rich yuppies who put them on their walls as 'art.'

Put these side by side with a cherry SG Std or a white SG Custom...sacrilege!

Re: Gibson SG Zoot Suit

Lets be honest here with all the griping about plywood. Many revered hollowbodies have plywood construction. Ever hear of a 335 or a Gretsch Guitars? Who knows how these things will sound...

I think someone at Gibson is an avid shooter and got a little too excited about laminated gun stocks like these (which I've seen a surge of in the recent years):

Re: Gibson SG Zoot Suit

It's one thing to use plywood on a hollow or semi-hollow, but in a solid body?

Why?

Have you heard a birch ply solid body guitar? I know I haven't. It may sound like crap, it may not.

I'm not doing this to intentionally start an argument, but I just don't understand how so many people consistently (not just in this thread) say that something is going to sound like crap, without even having playing one. Who knows, it might blow some people away...

That's all I can account it for. I'm an avid shooter, but even when I go to the gun store, I think those stocks are ridiculously ugly.

It's been used on pool cues too- and I've seem some delaminate. It's not something I see desirable in a guitar.

What would be cool is if they did a walnut top with blued (gunmetal blue) hardware and possibly engraved hardware (the engraving is pushing it) if they wanted to appeal to the gun collector market.

Re: Gibson SG Zoot Suit

I love my all my Gibsons, but this one is too far out for me. Almost reminds me of the Fender Wildwood guitars of 40 years ago.

So odd, that Gibson is such a conservative guitar company; and when they try something innovative and well....wild, they invariably bomb.

I have one of the Gibson Guitar Of The Week Tom Morgan Artist Classic Antique Les Pauls. It is a really, really great playing and sounding guitar; nice moderately flamed top; and a whacked out paint job. Kinda looks the the Heritage Cherry Sunburst Les Paul that partied too much the night before, woke up with a hangover and put her makeup on crooked. But you know what? My girfriend thinks it's gorgeous! She's really the reason I bought it. I would have passed on it due to the graphic, but it really is a great playing guitar; and she just loved it so much. I get a kick playing it just to see people's reactions. Most guys think it's ugly, but several women have come up to the stage and told me how beautiful this guitar is, so it's not just Leslie. (Funny, cause the guys will invariably drool over the one with the BBQ grill flame top and the more traditional finish.)

Anyway, thank God I'm not in the market for an SG at the moment. But, my guess is that women are going to love the looks of these guitars and want to bear the children of any guy with one of these slung over his shoulder. At the same time, I think I'll play it safe and keep the pictures of this monstrosity away from my GF! I wouldn't want her buying one for me to play--I don't think I'm man enough!!!! LOL!

Oh, for Christ sakes..... *headdesk*

Does anyone at Gibson even know what a zoot suit is? How does this:

white-black_zoot_suit.jpg

translate into a guitar that looks like that? If I wanted to do a zoot suit Gibson, I'd do it up in straight black and/or white with some classy chrome hardware and some pinstriping down the side and maybe a textured pickguard... ebony board with some unique inlay, maybe include a stylized case or a strap but good God man WTF did Gibson pick out of their stool now? Sheesh.

The low-end Martin acoustics I've seen have laminate necks like that and I didn't think they sounded that nice. I'm sure some people on here have played a solidbody plywood guitar back in the days when asian-made guitars were nothing like they are today.

I'm sure Gibson pulls it off sounding somewhat decent, and I think a rigid body on something as thin as an SG isn't terrible, but this screams cheapness and I'd have a hard time believing it sounds as good as normal wood.

When I saw the thread that was what I pictured and actually thought it would rock.

Danelectro does it. just kidding

There is a point. Danos are made of less than "ideal" materials and I love them and while I don't like Martin (never clicked with them for some reason) they are great guitars.

A point that has already been made in other threads is that we want Gibson (and others) to change but when they do we bag on them. On one had I think we need to be more open (I'm including myself), on the other I can't see how the heck that thing is supposed to sound good. I'm willing to try one, tough. I'm just hoping nobody sees me doing it lol

Re: Gibson SG Zoot Suit

Nobody loves SG's more than I do, I have a few of them, but this is pushing the boundaries perhaps a bit more than they should be. I can't see these being big sellers to anyone but a few burnt-out Dead fans.

You know, I've been trying to get them to make a Super SG (HSS with P-90's, and a 5-way switch), which would have a market, and they come out with this & the 'Reverse V' which have no chance of ever being anything more than long-forgotten novelties. Have they implemented a random drug testing program at Gibson yet? From the world's leader in electric guitar design in the 1950's, to this, another chapter in "The circus comes to town."

The only market they are concerned with are the folks that by all the rare issues, so that they can have all the oddities in thier collections 20 yrs down the road when no one remembers these and the others

Re: Gibson SG Zoot Suit

I've been smoking for 17 straight hours in an attempt to make these guitars work for me.

Sadly, they still look dreadful...however, my carpet has turned into a dragon and is attempting to eat the cat, so all is not lost.

Re: Gibson SG Zoot Suit

You got it all wrong, it's a guitar shaped lollipop...after ya play it ya eat it.

Most of the original zoot suits were silver-grey with thin vertical stripes. Their making reference to the stripes.

Re: Gibson SG Zoot Suit

If they were priced around $200, Id get myself one of those, a Hello Kitty Strat, and an Avril Lavigne Tele and rawk out with my cawk out lol!
