Gibson SG Zoot Suit

Re: Gibson SG Zoot Suit

far from jazz in what sense?

half the jazz i hear is boring and lame and traditional, the other half is completely off-kilter and insane and nonsensical...so a 50-year-old guitar style with a radical new color job makes sense to me...

I have to agree with you on this. When everyone in the band is playing in a different key, it's not very enjoyable to listen to; more like a form of punishment. Granted it takes a lot of talent to play like that, but that doesn't necessarily make it listenable. Maybe it's because were not as sophisticated musicially as jazz lovers, and are quite content to listen 'plain old' blues & rock. I'm an unpretentious man of simple tastes (that's all I can afford!).

Re: Gibson SG Zoot Suit

If that was paint, maybe I'd like it. But as far as I know birch isnt a tonewood- and multi ply birch on a guitar? Hell no.

It's ugly on guns, ugly on guitars

Birch is a tonewood. Nothing wrong with good birch. A local custom builder, Amfisound, for example uses arctic birch on thei top-of-the-line series.

http://www.highmountaintonewood.com/id25.htm:
Although Birch does not have a current reputation as an instrument wood many fine Gibson and Martin guitars and mandolins were built in 1940's and 50's from this wood. Contemporary builders report that the acoustic properties of this wood match or exceed the more common Big Leaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum). This wood is widely available for use as back and side woods. Although larger trees are required sourcing them is possible.

Still, I do not know of any jazz guitarist who has used SGs. Les Paul I would understand, since it was designed to be a jazz guitar, and it has been used in jazz. Similarly, if the fact that it's 50 years old makes it traditional, is an explorer a traditional guitar ? And BTW, have you heard of Ornette Coleman, whos debut is from 1959: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72SVN9sO4P4&feature=related
E: my 2000th post! of BS :D

Re: Gibson SG Zoot Suit

WTF? "Zoot Suit"

I don't see ANY art deco in there.

SOme cool looks no doubt - but way more Ben & Jerry's / Jam Band vibey.

Re: Gibson SG Zoot Suit

It's the SG version of your Strat man. I thought you'd be the only one besides me who's stoked about it.

Oh well. Guess I'm the most original and forward-thinking person on THIS forum.............

Maybe I'm getting old... I'm refinishing that Strat.

Re: Gibson SG Zoot Suit

They make me think of Eric Clapton in Cream and general 60's psychedelia. I like them.

It's more of a $399 GAS then a $1199 GAS though, should have left them for Epiphone...

Re: Gibson SG Zoot Suit

Played one today that is about the best thing I can say about it.

Seriously they look kind of cool in an oddball/outhere kind of way but for $1200 they have got to be ****ting us.

Re: Gibson SG Zoot Suit

take the first one, make it a hollow body and have only one phat cat in the neck, hardtail strat bridge and I may consider it.

Everybody's been referring to this one. I thought I might upload an image so y'all can tell the difference between a work of art, worthy of worship, and a piece of consumerist **it

duh. of course Eric Clapton's custom painted vintage SG is cooler than anything Gibson has made in the past 30 years. Basically goes without saying buddy.

The similarities are just that they're psychedelic SGs...it's totally a retro / throwback thing, but it's also a new idea so you can take it on stage without everybody in the crowd saying "Oh this guy thinks he's in Cream, that's funny."

Re: Gibson SG Zoot Suit

The Joker stole batman's signature Black SG, and messed with it :jester:

I personally like the black and white color scheme and the clear pickup bobbins. :D

I wonder how it sounds.

Re: Gibson SG Zoot Suit

The Cincinnati GC has one of these in black/natural. I picked it up, gave it a thorough inspection, but did not plug it in (getting close to close and I was there for monitors). Anyway... I stand by my opinion. This was by far the most unique guitar on the wall. It has visual interest... it's a new idea... it's not another boring-ass traditional color scheme or cliche graphic. Simply put, it's different. Cool different. The guitar would benefit from a plain-Jane set of pickups that would not detract from the body, IMO.

There was far more contouring than I expected. I knew it would be contoured just by knowing how they acheived the affect, but this did not feel like the flat-top beveled edge SGs we are accustomed to. It had a much different feel. The finish felt raw but smooth. It was closer to an unfinished feel than the cheapy feel of the faded series guitars.

Unplugged it felt fine to play. It wasn't particularly resonant, (heh, big surprise ) but for a guitar hanging on the wall of a GC it was reasonably well set up. I regret not plugging in, but like I said I had other departments to visit and I didn't feel like competing with the random guy butchering the mainstream hard rock riff of the week.

All that said, I still couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by the feeling that somewhere some Gibson executive is relishing the fact that they have successfully marketed and sold a $1200 plywood guitar. Say what you must about Gibson, but that's marketing genius. We should all be so lucky to be as good at our jobs as the people in the Gibson marketing department.
