Re: Glow In The Dark Humbuckers?

I'd buy em.
I love 80's metal!

Why not make different color "faceplates" if you will then you can color your pups without yanking them, and you can play jet black in the light and on stage go glow under the blacklight? I'd buy it.

I don't want this to sound harsh...but IMO, if this an example of the new products/direction Duncan is looking into and not actual USEFUL things like say the "infamous" overwound PAF...this is very disappointing to me as a consumer. Why would you test the market with this and not an overwound PAF? Cost is the only reason I could see.

Again not trying to hijack to the overwound PAF...just using that as an example of products people ask(beg) for...I can't imagine glow in the dark buckers are...'cept maybe at halloween?

I agree with you jeff 1,000,000% to the power of 33.

To not hijack the thread, I would say that they are OK and different. I think there will be some demand for them. How much??? It probally wont be a huge demand but, its a new idea at least. If they do not become standard production items, it would be cool to at least have it available as a floor custom option. Patent it before Dimarzio gets their hands on it!

see the thing thats interesting in my opinion is that if you scroll down on the link that Evan gave the pickup looks almost completely traditional when not glowing in the dark. its not some odd shade of bright green like most other glow in the dark objects, and certainly would look 100% traditional to the audience during a stage performance till they cut the lights...
Very interesting

^this is what it looks like when its not glowing

This is a good point. Meaning, for the vast majority of the time (when you're not "glowing" your pickups), they'd look like this.

Does that change anyone's opinion?

Re: Glow In The Dark Humbuckers?

If you are hoping on audience reaction as the selling point...uhhmmm...I guess it's just going to be for the neck pickup only then?

Cos when you are playing...your hand will be covering the majority if not all of the bridge pickup the vast majority of the time.

I just don't see the point other than as a novelty (and a weak one at that)

Re: Glow In The Dark Humbuckers?

Good point. So basically, you'd only really be seeing the neck pickup. And then only in optimal glowing conditions. Otherwise, you'd have that slightly off-white look ("double glow?").

For those of you who like it, do you still think it's a cool idea? If so, if you could tell me why you like it, that would help a lot.

Thanks to everyone for their opinons on the glow in the dark thing.

Re: Glow In The Dark Humbuckers?

i like it cuz its original and would make a very memorable show (something neccesary to be recognized and possibly hit big) like i said it looks like a normal bucker esp. from afar where the audience would be so there is a shock/surprise factor there and the fact that since it looks normal you dont neccesarily have to make it glow if you dont want to

Re: Glow In The Dark Humbuckers?

I think it's cool. My guitars have had whacky colors mixed and mis-matched before so hey, glow in the dark would just add to it. I do agree with Jeff on the neck vs. bridge thing.

What I like about it is the awe people will get. Remember, lots of products sell based on the shock value.

Something else, ok it's probably out there but why not, when was the last time you could see what you were playing on a dark stage at the beginning of a song or something? Say you have a song coming up where the stage is dark when it starts. You can't see. Charge the puppy up with a flashlight at the side of the stage, come out. Hey, you can see your strings...LOL. Glow in the dark single-coil covers would be cool for this too, especially of they look like the bucker does color wise in normal light.

Re: Glow In The Dark Humbuckers?

I could see it on some guitars, just not any I currently own.

So glow-in-the-dark is off white in normal light as in almost a cream color. If so then I like them even more.

Re: Glow In The Dark Humbuckers?

yes.

IMO, giving it as an aditional color and doing combinations of colors like with other colored bobbins, is the best idea.

custom shop isnt available to everyone, but it is a nice adition to be able to buy one in lets say black/glow zebra for bridge and neck.. so you could get funky and ****, give the customer the option of picking which color goes where. i am a layout/color freak and on a guitar, stuff HAS to match or it doesnt belong there. i am sure many others are like that and wont buy one if it is only available as a neck color

and finaly.. it is the same thing as pink, blue, red or yellow bobbins, you dont see them everywhere as they are not the most popular ones, but they are featured and you can get them if you desire so.

i'd like to see the glow ones in the same respect as i think, that way they would get the most sales.

saying that, i can TOTALY picture a slime green pointy headed maple/maple necked guitar with a chrome floyd and subtle glow in the dark pinstripes guitar with that pickup in the bridge :headbang: bring it on!! (and this smilie needs some hair.. we're not all bald like dio ya know ;))

Now that I know there are only 12 in existence...my interst is growing.

Ok...I've been thinking about these...I might be interested if I was building a Charvel type replica or something, but does the pickup mounting ring glow too?

i dont know about solid colors, but if you could get graphics like flames or a neon red pentagram or something like that to glow in the dark that would be kick-ass :headbang:

Glow in the dark flames, etc would be amazing!

I think it's a cool idea in general. I had this idea myself actually (should have patented it!!! Damn!!!!). I wanted to have all the hardware glowing on a black guitar, including the fret markers...

I also think one major selling point is the fact that it looks normal when not seen in the dark.

Re: Glow In The Dark Humbuckers?

Cool Idea :headbang:

These would look totally badass in an old Ibanez Universe :32:

Would a black light cause these bobbins to glow any differently than, say, white bobbins? I don't know the answer. Anyone?

No ;)

*Edit* Reread the question.. YES! THe GID´s would still glow green whilt whites would become that funky Blacklit purplish white ;)

Re: Glow In The Dark Humbuckers?

Evan,
To answer your question between Lame Vs Cool, I'd have to vote for Lame. That said, I'm sure there are some situations that they would look cool in,and having more options is always a good thing.
So my opinion of the Glowing PUP's are.... If it doesn't cost too much do it as your audience for these will probably be pretty small.
And that sir is my final answer.

Re: Glow In The Dark Humbuckers?

I LIKE! At the least it should be something you can order from the costom shop.

Re: Glow In The Dark Humbuckers?

My Rat pedal has Glow-in-the dark dial indicaters,

Strike up a Glow In the Dark -- deal with The knob and switch tip makers while at Namm and possibly -- offer a bit more to the whole package, with Glowing Knobs & switch tips + Single coil plastic Glow-covers with Company Logos or with out.. for Gibbys and Fenners?--may try for a single Ply Pickgaurd too?

I offer up my scouting skills -- to try and go get that deal done fer ya if ya like?

Re: Glow In The Dark Humbuckers?

I certainly wouldn't buy one, but no harm in adding glow-in-the-dark to the available bobbin colors IMO. It would just be another color I'm not interested in.

The picture in the link you used at the beginning of this thread was taken using a black light. I spoke with Mike's Music this morning, and that is what he told me.
