How many picks do you own?

Not sure if this topic has been asked before but figured i’d raise the topic. i own 50+ jazz iii’s from the days when i was using those. In more recent years i’ve pretty much exclusively been using jd 205s. I keep finding the 205s all over the house so i decided to order more to keep the jar i store most of them replenished. I wasn’t thinking straight and ordered 36 more, when after, i peered into my jar, counted how many i had before placing last nights order and discovered i still have over 150 in my stash. Lol. I’m a freakin’ hoarder.

Re: How many picks do you own?

Hell, I have at least 25 behind my washer and dryer, before I start even thinking about ones I can get to.

Re: How many picks do you own?

For the record—- years ago i had one exclusive “red bear” pick. I loved it, and would argue it was my favorite pick i’ve ever owned. But, yeah, i lost it. That’s the reason i’ve decided to keep a bigass pile in a mug that i can just reach for. I leave them throughout the house but someone (most likely my dad or sister) keeps moving them to undisclosed piles throughout the house. Hence, why i need a crapload in a mug.

Re: How many picks do you own?

i still have my Rick Nielson pick -my first pick I ever owned and hundreds of cool artist ones from gigging over the years.

As far as regular orange, yellow, and green Dunlop ones -god I have hundred or maybe thousands

I have a bin at each amp with at least 30-50 in each bin plus in most rooms and then tons in bags in road cases and instrument cases including unopened packages.

Also my toolkits have them, behind every piece of furniture, my cars both have picks -my jackets in the hall -where does it end?

I guess I have a problem too.

Re: How many picks do you own?

I have a lot of picks (100+) that either were the kind I used before (Ultex, Gator Grip, Tortex) or ones that were given to me/left behind from students. Now I am using custom JazzIII-shape delrin picks with my logo/website on them. I have about 25 left, so it will be time to order more soon. I have them in little bowls around where I practice guitar.

Re: How many picks do you own?

Maybe 5 are always within reach.

Maybe another 5 tucked away in packages for replenishment.

I'm lucky with picks. I only use 4 different types;

Tortex purple 1.4
Tortex blue 1.0
Ultex 1.0
Black Fang .90

Re: How many picks do you own?

I order them by the gross, usually order more when I get down to a couple dozen.

Re: How many picks do you own?

A few years back I got a bag each of the orange, yellow and green dunlops. I might not buy picks again in my lifetime. As a poor college student I got in the good habit of always putting my pick under the strings at the first fret. I'm much more likely to wear out a pick than to lose one. I really only play about five different guitars so I have five picks going at any one time.

Re: How many picks do you own?

I don’t keep a count of my picks. But I would’t be able to answer with certainty about guitars either without sitting down and counting each one. Mostly using Dunlop .73 or .80 delrin types. I also have a stapler type punch that makes picks out of old credit cards. I have handfuls of old credit cards picks around.

Re: How many picks do you own?

Maybe 5 at downstairs and 5 upstairs in use.

Should have at least 50 around the house, pockets etc... Which I keep finding only by accident. Never when I actually need them...

Re: How many picks do you own?

Less every time I play, and more every time I do laundry....

Re: How many picks do you own?

I use an odd shape....something not often stocked locally. So I saw an eBay ad about 5 years back with large packs of 50 so I bought 4 or 5 of them. Still have most of them but the points wear more quickly than other types so they will not last forever at all

Re: How many picks do you own?

can one really own a pick?
they are so fluid and ethereal
the come in and out of our lives like the wind
picks are the fingernails of the gods

Re: How many picks do you own?

I have a out 6 or 8 Jazz-III’s in red and black, both regular and max grip... Ive had them forever too... once they lose their tip I run them across sand paper to get their tip/edge back in them, but they have a long wear life so I can go a while without doing that.

Re: How many picks do you own?

I probably have 300 in the house. Miss Leslie has a huge collection of the stuff I don't use/like. I've splurged on the Stoneworks and V-Picks, but I still have a good collection of Gators, Tortex and Ultex 1.14mm picks around.

Usually when I hit a mom and pop store, I try to buy SOMETHING. A pack of picks, or a set of finger and thumb picks won't break me, nor will it keep them in business, but I hope it helps.

I carry about 12 picks in my pocket, a mix of the various picks I like. I have a little coin purse for them and a pick holder on my keyring with purple tortex.

Re: How many picks do you own?

I think of picks like paint brushes. Different picks, sizes, and thicknesses for different effects. That being said there are hundreds around the house. I buy my go-to picks by the gross and have about 20-25 of my favorite bone and horn ready to go at any time.

Re: How many picks do you own?

A couple of dozen purple Tortex. I tend to wear the tip off, so after I while I replace them.

Re: How many picks do you own?

I buy them by 10 so I have dozens of them.
There is always a few in my pockets, about 10 in my bag, lots in the flat in various places and I kept old ones I don't use anymore.
But I am ore collecting slides than picks.

My fave used to be the Jim Dunlop Tortex (Orange and Red, and previously yellow) but the articulation of my right thumb has been damaged a tremolo picking overdose but mostly because of hours of tabla practise (playing one instrument can be bad for another instrument. ie. for sarod you need long nails for guitar you need short nails So for the very fast strumming (black metal like) I would use nylon Jim Dunlop picks, but then I hate them for soloing : you need something harder to have more expression.

A couple of years ago I found the solution to my problem : the Herdim picks with have three different corners so you can switch from hard to soft. I prefer the harder sides (III and II) but everytime I risk an inflammation of the first articulation I easily switch without stopping playing to the side I or when I need a different sound.

Now I use mostly the red and blue Herdim and I have a few yellow (harder) as well.
They are from Germany. I do not know what kind of plastic it is. It looks like nylon (?) a bit harder I would say. Interestingly enough they do not seem to wear off (!). The Tortex wear off quickly (but this is not a problem as DavidRavenMoon said you just change them).
