Hughes & Kettner combos

I was recently notified by my landlord that one of my neighbors doesn't really care for my current rig. You would think that in a college apartment complex, people would be a little more carefree, but anyways.....

I decided its time to send my amp and pedals home, and go back to basics:
guitar + 15watt combo.

I am looking at the Hughes & Kettners. Any suggestions?
I just want volume, high, mid, low, gain etc (like i said, back to basics, so please dont suggest line6 spiderII instead)

Hughes and Kettner Edition Tube 20. Great amp with closed back, two channels, reverb, 12" speaker.

I have an Edition Blue 30w- two channel solid state with Reverb and a Jensen Blue.

Not bad for cleans at low volumes, decently responsive, and has some cool low gain tones. Turn up the gain and it gets a bit noisy with my tele (60c hum). Got mine for 175 and I think it's a solid amp for that price.

I've not tried the Tube series.

does anyone have a comparison with the Marshall MG10CD??
harmony central people, as well as a couple Music123 people seem to think the marshall is awesome and the hughes and kettner sucks.

i am buying blindly from the net, so i'm trusting you guys

A tube equipped Hughes & Kettner combo will blow away a solid state Marshall, no way around it.

Just for options - do have a little play on a Roland Cube. They are "basic" but great for tone in the dorm... And cheap

Hughes and Kettner Edition Tube 20. Great amp with closed back, two channels, reverb, 12" speaker.

I'll have to recommend this amp also. It has what you're looking for, reverb, gain, bass, mid, treble, and volume for each channel. I use it in my bedroom getting pretty good tones, but it sounds 10 times better in a band situation. Amazing cleans and great mid gain crunch. The eq might take a little while to get used to, but once you find the sweet spots it's hard to put your guitar down. I throw an od in front of the gain channel to tighten it up a little and add a little more drive without it getting too muddy. I really can't say enough good things about this amp, it leaves my Marshall rig in the dust.

Errr, what is it the neighbors don't like about your current rig? Have they asked the landlord to insist on "true-tube-basic-tone"? If so, I'd also say the H&K tube 20, (i have the older generation version) But the pedals, i'm sure those next door shouldn't deny a man his FX-toys! Also, i'm guessing that it's that dropped-to-B tuning that's disturbing their Oprah re-runs. That bowel-shaking stuff travels...regardless of rig (unless headphone)

But if they're unhappy with your current TONE, then H&K is the way to please them...

I think he's talking about getting a small practice amp that wont bother the neighbours, surely 20watts of tube power would still be overkill?

As for the MG, its not all that great im afraid, pretty buzzy distortion and generally no character, ive heard much better things about the Cube's and if i was buying again, i would probably go for a cube over my MG.

yes, definately, 20watts tube is still too much i'm afraid :evil:
i'm looking 10-15watt solid state. i dont want to replace my current amp (which a new tube amp would do) i simply want something that sounds decent at low volume

i'm specifically looking at the Hughes and Kettner Edition Blue 15
will they satisfy my low volume tone needs?

Aaah, in that case, i again will sing the song of the Roland Cube 30. I still am amazed at how good it sounds, and it's got some very nice little onboard effects. The clean channel is just plain lovely. And the models are really useful. Cheapish too. Do check it out, mmmkay?

Roland Cube or Vox Valvetronix. Both would give you what your looking for. I have the Microcube, which rocks for being so incredibly small. Check 'em out!

The marshall MG series costs about 3 times what they're worth...most overpriced and horrible-sounding amps ever.

Personally I like those Vox ones with the chrome grilles, they sound awesome and are pretty cheap too.

I finally made a verdict on the Hughes and Kettner Edition Blue 15. I DO NOT like it. It is going back.

The cleans are terrible. I agree with a review I read- there is hardly any difference between clean and gain. A "clean" chord sounds muddy and distorted. what a waste of a "specially designed Celestion Speaker"

The construction is kinda flimsy. it is very disappointing and very uninspirational.
the only good point is that it looks pretty cool. it just urges you to plug in, but when you hear it, its telling to to unplug quickly!

I can't say anything about the more expensive H&K's, but stay the hell away from this one!

I think i'm gonna use the refund money to put a celestion into my old line6 spider and utilize the headphone jack more to satisfy the neighbors. what do you think about a vintage 30 going into my spider 112?

not a bad idea, but via headphones, you wont be reaping benefits of nicer speaker. Also be aware that if that new celestion is more "efficient" than your existing one, it's going to have more percieved volume. Do look/listen to the Roland Cube and the Vox modelling amps if the new speaker route doesnt happen...

other wise, rent the stacks and punish
