I think the 24" scale is appealing and the strings are slinkier. Unique and cool-looking. You could splurge on the upcoming Lollar Full-Range replicas and keep the look and vastly improve the sound.
The Blacktops look cool, but Fender has a sketchy history designing humbuckers (with few exceptions like the original Seth Lover Full Ranges and the new Wolfgang pups) so you'd have to replace them anyway, more than likely. Frankly, I'd rather get the Jazz with the Jazz neck pup and the 'bucker bridge for more versatility. I just watched the Incubus Live at Red Rocks DVD and have a whole new love for the Jazzmaster.
