Is it possible to turn my 5150 into a Marshall?

I'm kind of sick of the voicing of my Peavey 5150 now. It's too buzzsaw and artificial sounding to me; I guess I've just shifted my tastes again, because I used to be madly in love with the thing. So, is it possible to have it modded into a high-gain Marshall? The tone I'm looking for is basically the Yngwie sound, so high-gain Plexi. It would be nice to have it do some VH tones as well. How much can I expect to have to pay to have this done and where should I have it done?

That would basically mean changing the entire amp into another one. It's possible but what's the point then. It's basically the same as buying another amp. And probably cheaper too also. A mod like that would cost a damn fortune plus it really defeats the purpose of it.

just crank the gain up all the way and go outside and crank the volume up all the way and totally rock out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Soldano was a little too dark and compressed sounding to my ears, so I took it up to Voodoo Amps to have it tweaked. I'd pose your question to them...they're a straight forward and honest bunch.

The Soldano was tweaked to be more Marshallesque sounding, and I think they succeeded. Cost for the mods (including a depth mod installed for the XL option) and a retube/rebias was $350. And I also had the clean channel tweaked to make it a bit more chimey.

Yeah voodoo are the guys that told me that. lol. There are some amp mods they won't do because in their opinion, if you replace almost all of the amp for a specific sound, you're better off just buying a different amp and going from there.

I'd agree. The foundation tone was there in my Soldano....I just needed it tweaked a smidge. I'm gonna do the same to the gain channel on my Rivera.
It's close but needs just a little work.

No offense, but Peavey suxx, and they make 90% of their money bilking kids with no budget into thinking that their products are good.
Sell the Peavey, buy a Marshall.

screw marshall, maybe the sound is lacking because you need to tweak it differently than you would a marshall. but how old are the tubes first off? and is it that it just doesn't sound like it used to, or is it just that your tastes have changed? are you going to want/need that extra gain?

a really close marshall/slash tone i've gotten is with the following settings:
lead pre: 3
Low 5
Mid 5
High 8
Post: -
Resonance: 5-7
presence: 8.8-9

just try to emulate a marshall with it first perhaps, basically, i'd turn up the low, mids, and turn the highs down, and lower the presence as well, just make it sound as ****ty as you can, and you'd be close to marshall.

A peavey wont do marshall, a marshall wont do peavey. I also want a Laney. Go to BorislavMitic.com and listen to some of his songs. He uses a Laney VC50 for some of em.

I'm gonna hafta dissagree there

i don't care for their guitars, but they make some really good amps

with the right tubes & cab, it's hard to beat the crunch on a 5150, or an xxx

infact, if i was in the market for hi gain, and given a marshall, i'd sell it and buy a peavey

and for the record, marshall makes most of their money by assembling various car audio parts into the world renouned mg100

just kidding TO...but i have to say this...i've never played a marshall i like (honest) and i have played a ton of them....but i do own a peavey ultra plus which i love! i do own a marshall but it collects dust lol...not enough balls for me!

also, i was never a big fan of the 5150 though, a bit too much bite, not enough chunk!

and i think nuntius has the best answer for you if your not happy with the 5150.

Send it to Voodoo, have them lower the gain, possibly remove a preamp tube stage, clean it up, warm the bias up a ton, and throw in EL34's. That'll get you as close as possible.


In all honesty, sell it and get yourself a Laney .

hm, that's weird

for a couple weeks i borrowed my friend's 5150, had gt6l6r's and 12ax7c's, and man, on the rythm channel, through a celestion '75 loaded cab, man it doesn't get any more chunky
