Johnny Hiland Joins the EBMM Family....

Re: Johnny Hiland Joins the EBMM Family....

Interesting move, his sig model with PRS sure was pretty but I always appreciated his playing more then I cared about what guitar he was playing on. The guy can flat out play anything from any style of music and do it flawlessly. He is truly a gift to the music world, I wish he got more recognition for the talent he is, who cares what he's playing as long as it sounds good to him and plays good...

Re: Johnny Hiland Joins the EBMM Family....

He seems to follow any company that will have him.

You need to remember that a pro musician needs to find any way he/she can to earn a living. Making CDs and even touring, a lot of times, doesn't quite cover it. Endorsements can be a great way to substantially helping a pro player make ends meet. I remember talking to Billy Mason, Tim McGraw's tour drummer. He said that when the they're touring, life is good; however, when they're not on the road, a lot of the road players have to find supplemental ways to earn their living. There aren't too many artists who can/will afford to keep their touring on retainer and actually pay them a yearly salary. Billy told me he sometimes will even wash tour buses for extra cash.

All that said, EBMM doesn't pay their endorsees. Johnny may have been given his new Silhouette; but I don't know. So, IMHO, when an artist goes with a manufacturer as an endorser, I see that not so much as "this is their favorite gear", but more as "I need to make a living". In the case of EBMM signature models, I think the artists do get a cut of the sale. That's one of the reasons EVH left them. They couldn't turn out the product fast enough.

Re: Johnny Hiland Joins the EBMM Family....

Johnny Hiland would happily endorse foreign governments and home enema kits if somebody was willing to pay him for it.

The guy has more endorsements than peyton, tiger, and jordan combined.

Re: Johnny Hiland Joins the EBMM Family....

wow I didn't know he was blind.

He has Physiologic Nystagmus which is a form of involuntary eye movement that is part of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). It is characterized by alternating smooth pursuit in one direction and saccadic movement in the other direction. Is he legally blind? I'm not sure.....

Re: Johnny Hiland Joins the EBMM Family....

Johnny IS legally blind but not completely blind.

As for the EBMM thing he blows my mind...he'll endorse almost anything. I'm waiting to see Johnny Hiland hats and boots...

Don't get me wrong, he's got a lot of talent and ability and I know he's gotta make money but does he have to do it hocking his name to anybody that'll give him a buck?!

I thought EVH was bad but Johnny's got 'em all beat in the "put my name on your stuff" game!

Maybe, but I know that if I was young and trying to make a living playing music, you can bet I would take any nickel that came my way as long as it wasn't illegal or immoral.

I guess that is the difference between some players and others...

I mean, what happened to musicians making their money from making music?!

I know album sales are down but there are only a few guys out there whoreing their names out...

Re: Johnny Hiland Joins the EBMM Family....

I don't think they make a lot of money off endorsements to really make a dent in income. What may happen is when it comes time to go on tour, he (any anyone else) needs road worthy guitars, and the endoresment companies step up to the plate and give them a few guitars- either free, or most likely at a substantially discounted artist rate that makes it more affordable for the artist.

Then there's a company like Fender I heard pays their artists $100 for every signature series/artist series guitar sold.

I know what you mean. But, at least for now, just making music isn't enough. That is, unless you're a HUGE celebrity. The road guys might make about $200/show. As far as album sales, the labels take so much of that it's almost not worth it. Touring, merchandise, swag, and other things like that are a touring musician's best bet.

Re: Johnny Hiland Joins the EBMM Family....

I really do not like the guitar or the kitchen. But I wasn't slamming the man. Ok maybe a little with the kitchen....

Re: Johnny Hiland Joins the EBMM Family....

Not my taste in kitchens either....

Sorry, I guess I'm an EBMM fanboy....

Re: Johnny Hiland Joins the EBMM Family....

I like the Silo Specials a bit better- 22 frets makes the neck pickup sound better, I think. Mine is the best guitar I have played.
