Just saw this: Gibson cutting production/raising prices/modifying stuff

Re: Just saw this: Gibson cutting production/raising prices/modifying stuff

I think the "27% lower fret wire" alone is easily worth the price increase.

Re: Just saw this: Gibson cutting production/raising prices/modifying stuff

Other changes include the expansion of the Min-ETune automated tuning system, which will be re-branded as "G-Force," as standard on almost all guitars.

This is the thing that makes the least sense to me.

Us independent luthier's need to start figuring out how to make good guitars for $1000 or less. I believe it is possible & thanks to the internet, it should be much easier for consumers to find the smaller guys out there. There is a niche to be filled here...

Do you mean make good guitars for $1,000 or less, or sell good guitars for $1,000 or less?

Re: Just saw this: Gibson cutting production/raising prices/modifying stuff

Meh, it doesn't even register for me.

The optimist, best case scenario is that they decided to scale back production for the sake of quality, forcing them to raise prices to compensate (ok, let's just accept it as a hypothetical). The result being Gibson turning more like a boutique top-end guitar manufacturer that only rockstars and blues layers can afford to get.

The cynic i.e. more realistic scenario IMHO is that they simply wanted to unload their unmoved stock while at the same time artificially inflating their product's value, making it more "sought after", whatever that means in this economy. Kinda like "you don't know what you have until you lose it" mentality except in a really twisted way.

In either case, it just doesn't register. Even before this there were at least a dozen manufacturers (probably more) that produce a much better product than any of the Epis and with better prices to boot plus I can def. name at least half a dozen or so top-end manufacturers whose production-line models are (arguably) superior than anything the Gobson CS has ever churned out (for half the price) and I only say "arguably" because there are still those who even now believe in that "Only a Gibson is good enough" motto and are willing to go through two dozen Gibsons in order to find "that one" to justify it.
Well, to those I say, happy hunting!

New slogan... "Only a Gibson is expensive enough."

For the price Gibson want now i'd buy a PRS before I ever thought about Gibson but even in that i'm still not the biggest PRS fan but if i'm dropping over $1,500 to $2,000 i'm going with a company that produces a guitar that i'm sure is worth that much quality wise with little to no flaws from the factory.

To be honest their are only four brands that I would consider purchasing a single cut model from and those are Charvel (Desolation SC series), Dean Zelinsky Private Stock, Omega guitars, and PRS. Also certain Ibanez Artcore models.

Gibson's slogan "Only a Gibson is good enough" always makes me think of another slogan --

"good enough for government work"

Re: Just saw this: Gibson cutting production/raising prices/modifying stuff

I have 3 Gibsons, and no desire for more. Gibson has now officially made the decision to commit professional suicide. They are now priced pretty identical to Paul Reed Smiths, and their is no way in hell they can compete with that kind of quality. At least not from what I've seen in the last 5 years. Being a little cheaper (save the custom shop models) gave them a spot that wasn't occupied by too many others. Now, PRS will beat them on every single selling point save for the fact that the name Gibson on the headstock has historical relevance. I don't think people will spring the same money as a PRS just to say, "I bought a Gibson!" Especially when the same money would allow them to say, "I bought a Paul Reed Smith!"

The tributes better made??

Supposed to be. An actual thick maple cap with a veneer vs what may be alder with a flame maple veneer on the Standards, USA electronics, 1 11/16" nut width, long neck tenon. On paper they have all the right specs that I'd like. Played one at a local GC and it was solid. Good resonance and a really sweet tone with the Gibson pickups.

Re: Just saw this: Gibson cutting production/raising prices/modifying stuff

I'm betting that this is what happens when a company that makes guitars is being run by accountants instead of by someone who is first and foremost, a luthier.

Re: Just saw this: Gibson cutting production/raising prices/modifying stuff

That new Les Paul signature on the headstock is hideous.

Re: Just saw this: Gibson cutting production/raising prices/modifying stuff

that zero fret thing is... interesting to say the least.. :-/

Re: Just saw this: Gibson cutting production/raising prices/modifying stuff

Kramersteen built a 0 fret and likes em. Seems like a good idea but not a 30% more expensive good idea.

Re: Just saw this: Gibson cutting production/raising prices/modifying stuff

There is no mention of this on the Gibson website. I call hoax!

Re: Just saw this: Gibson cutting production/raising prices/modifying stuff

The consensus is that amazon leaked it. All of the pictures look pretty legit, it seems pretty real.

Re: Just saw this: Gibson cutting production/raising prices/modifying stuff

I guess this is a good thing for the lovely people in the good old Kalamazoo plant. Their price/quality ratio just improved even more so...
