Longest lasting pick material?

Which lasts the longest? The materials I can think of are ultex, lexan, tortex, nylon, and celluloid, but feel free to post about any material you've had experience with.

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

I also use SS picks they rule. My go to picks are horn or bone, they last for years and deliver a great warm tone.

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

Wouldn't have thought SS picks would be good, especially not on the covered bass strings. I used steel fingerpicks for a long while and they shredded the coverings of the bass strings after a very short period of hard picking. Not advisable unless you want to be changing strings a lot. I vote for tortex.

BTW: snakeaces you've given out 666 likes!! Just sayin'

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

I bought a bunch of picks of different makes and thicknesses a while back. The ones that are holding up best are the Dunlop Ultex, Jazz III, and D'Addario Duragrips.
The ones that wear out fastest are the Dunlop Gator Grips.

I started a thread about my pick adventure a while back, called "Picking Picks". Just updated it.

Recently I have been noticing that my Fender Picks are dropping like flies, but my tortex donlop are lasting awhile

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

carbon fiber, almost as hard as steel, will never rust, extreme wear resistance, even if you already use stainless steel pics a carbon fiber one is nice on your arsenal, as they emphacise different frequencies, my actual favourite picks are dunlop jazz iii max grip carbon fiber

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

I use Dunlop Tortex .50mm - the red ones. (I know, nobody uses "thins" any more, but it's what I'm used to!) These have done well for me for many, many years, but I've never come across a thin pick that lasts a long time... I'm always wearing the point down to round. I've never considered stainless steel or carbon fiber... do they make 'em in thins?

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

Gravity Picks last a long time too. I enjoy them, especially as a person that loves 1.5mm and thicker

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

Dunlop from best to worst...Ultex, Tortex, Gators, Delrin. I don't use nylon, so can't compare.

I've just started using V-Picks, and they seem to wear well. As do the Stoneworks picks. Tusq wears about like the Delrin, pretty fast.

IMO, it's hard to beat a Tortex pick. All-around, for tone and wear, still a solid choice.

Tortex are so cheap, I buy tons and just have them everywhere.

Have you tried the "carpet" trick? You can sharpen a tortex by rubbing it on carpet to reshape the tip, as if it was sandpaper.

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

I've never understood the people that are like "Here's my *one* Fender Tortex pick". Or they have one for each guitar, baffling to me.

I use Alice SS picks. They are pretty thin, only 0.3mm but they do not flex at all like the thin picks you are probably used to.

Paul Gilbert uses .60 Tortex picks. And Paul Gilbert has like the best picking in the world.
