Going by this demo only - which one do you prefer ?

Re: Marshall shoot out - which do you prefer ?

The vintage modern was probably my favorite of the lot. However, I'd love to be in the room there instead of hearing it through my computer speakers...

Re: Marshall shoot out - which do you prefer ?

77 sounded the best (coincidentally, thats where i hang out these days on my gsp1101). I was surprised the artist sounded so nice.

For my riffs and style I'd probably hang with the 77 or the mkiii. But it's tough to tell with the 800 line because sometimes an OD changes everything to perfect.

I need to hear some palm muting to see what's going on too. A lot of open chords sound similar through different amps. That dudes not much of a palm muter.

I liked the JTM-1C the best. As I dunno nothin about Marshalls because I historically think it's the Folgers coffee of guitar tone, but the JTM-1C sounded like it had a certain amount of more fullness while still maintaining that top-end skank, and it was a little lower gain. Some of those were just too mid-hi EQed, The JCM800 from the 80s sounded really dark to me, but I liked the drive on it.
If I'm doing high gain, it'll be either out of a pedal or out of a Matamp-style ultrabrit.

I'd take the 1980 JMP 2204 and 92 JCM900 MKIII. Part of the reason is because they sounded good in the clip, but also because they're definitive years that sound great when they're in optimum running condition.

That's an interesting vid. I'm wondering what kind of dirt box he's using?

Surprised that the SS Marshalls sounded so good, especially the Valvestate 8080. I like the deep bottom of the DSL 100 but there seems to be something missing in the upper registers, if that makes any sense. The JCM 800 4010 demo sounds NOTHING like my 4010 (EL-34s and G-85 speaker) did--mine could be really bright and piercing, but it always sounded killer in those third and fourth sets. The JCM 900 I thought sounded good; some people bash these amps, and I feel it often undeserved. The Vintage Modern is one of my faves, but I would save the mid boost switch for when I'm using single coils--it can get a little too thick.

And while I'd love to own another Marshall, there's nothing here that is going to make me junk my Mark III, IV and V Mesas.

It's amazing how many people are not palm muters... I just did advanced amp class with Bruce Egnater and the fellow demoing was a more chordy guy... He was great, but I really wanted to jump up and chunk for him lol.

It's tough for me to pick one. The DSL, 900, and a couple others stand out in this demo, though, which kinda surprised me.

How was the class? I wanted to sign up for it, but just don't have the extra cash or time right now.

So, I think what speakers you listen through will change your answer a lot. For me, the MG series sounded like there was very little treble to it. The valvestate sounded good but again, kind of 'boxy' for lack of a better word. My two favorites (after one listen, may have to go back) were the 87 lead (3005) and the DSL 100H, because those didn't cut off as many of the high/low frequencies. They sounded wider to me as well.

I don't think marshalls are cookie cutter sounds any more than mesas or fenders, and IME you can't go wrong with any of them really, except maybe the MG series. My .02, for what they're worth, would be to go with something that's all tube and high headroom (>50w) and pepper it up with your guitar of choice. But! That's not to say the MG doesn't sound great in a band setting - the video IMO suffers from guitarist syndrome (bass/drums soundtrack was the only accompaniment), where you think you're the most important thing in the room.

I'm not the stephen hawking of marshall amps but what I do know is that many of the amps that sounded so-so in the clip would sound excellent live with the right person playing. But such is the life we lead.

Re: Marshall shoot out - which do you prefer ?

I honestly thought none of those amps sounded good in that demo, no offense.

Re: Marshall shoot out - which do you prefer ?

Not necessarily that I'm not a Marshall fan, I think whoever made that demo could've done a better job. It was not miced up very well. At least that's my opinion.

Re: Marshall shoot out - which do you prefer ?

To be honest, I LOVE Marshalls. I wish I owned one. I just think the demo could've been done better. Maybe through a 4x12 with a different choice of mics and mic placement.

Oh i hear what you're say'n !

I believe i would have EQ'ed most amps slightly differently too.

For instance, i would have EQ'ed the Vintage Modern slightly warmer (in the Mid Boost 'OFF' mode - especially in clip no. 3), and, and, and.

A test like this will always be controversial, as you just can not please everyone's taste in something like this.

Re: Marshall shoot out - which do you prefer ?

Haven't listened to the clip but right off the top, I'd take either a Vintage Modern, DSL 50 or my own 1990 JCM 900 MkIII. Those 3 work for me right out of the gate from my experience with them.

Agreed, but like I said, if it were me, I would've done it differently, but hey! If this works for other people, more power to them!
