Mesa Rectifiers

Re: Mesa Rectifiers

Everybody has a budget, I understand that, but considering the features available, and MESA build quality, I don't feel that $1000 is steep at all assuming the amp suits your needs with wattage. Compare that to a new $1000 head from Fender or Marshall, or other mass market players, especially as regards to build quality/reliability.

Re: Mesa Rectifiers

dual rectos are like $1900 new, compared to that I don't think $999 is over the top, definetly not cheap either. I do think Mesa cabs are steep... and I so want that slant 1x12 cracks me up

Re: Mesa Rectifiers

Thanks for all the info guys.

I've been checking out Mesa Amps and I dig the high gain of the Recto's but had no clue what I needed to go with. With all the info you guys have given me, I am thinking the Dual 3 channel is the one for me. Now the hard part, waiting for a killer deal to pop up on one.

As for cabs, I've read that the Mesa's don't sound that great unless they are ran through the matching cab and that the cabs are voiced just for the amp. Is this just the model speakers used or because of the half open back design? I was planning on just using my Marshall 1960A with V30's and G12-75's.

Re: Mesa Rectifiers

I've heard good things about the mixture of the speakers but from experience know the g12-75s sound like **** by themselves through a Recto. My understanding is that those two particular speakers compliment eachother when used together. Having said that, I think you will be fine just using the Marshall you have. Then again, If the rig as a whole doesn't sound quite right you will know why. Mesa Cabs these days are typically closed back unless it is a Roadking Cab which is partially open back (small cutout on one side of back panel).

Re: Mesa Rectifiers

Yeah, as I mentioned previous, I actually thought the recto's tone was better when it was not run through the oversize recto, and run through the 5150 cab- big change. Then again, I don't like the typical "rectumfrier" tone.

I think the oversize cab just turns it into a big woofy mess-weird low end, and buzzy highs, and the mids get lost. I don't think V30s are a bad choice in general as they tend to tighten the sound up of an amp (though they can be VERY nasily with some amps). In a X pattern with 75s they might strike a nice balance, but I'd probably not find a full cab of 75s to my tastes with a rec either, as the 75s are all low end and high end.

Re: Mesa Rectifiers

The 3 channel Dual would probably be fine but don't expect much out of its clean channel IMO. I have always felt that the solo head clean channels were very limiting because they are stiff sounding (harsh, in your face, etc) and have no reverb to ad anykind of depth and smoothness. A reverb pedal may help the cleans but I can't be certain. All the bands that I can think of that use the solo heads use something else for cleans. That should tell you something (much more to be desired in the clean department)... :)

I guess I'm the odd ball on this then. I've been running my Triple Recto into one side of a standard size Avatar cab with a Swamp Thang in it and I love it. I'm either going to pull the wizard on the other side of that cab and replace it with another swamp thang or get a Mesa 2x12 and put swamp thangs in it. Personally, I don't how either one of my rectifier amps sound through the V30 Recto cab. I've been thinking about swapping them out and putting either C90's or EVM's in it.

You havn't tried either one through the Mesa cab? How come?

Re: Mesa Rectifiers

Ouch ... L&M informed me that they were the only distributors for Mesa in Canada and TBH I've never seen another guitar store carrying them (in Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver admittedly). Claimed they couldn't negotiate prices either. Now that I found out otherwise ... I'm kind of pissed off.

Steve's Music carries Mesa, as do a few independent shops. The prices are non-negotiable... same deal as in the US. I believe Mesa has a system where you can only become a dealer if there isn't another dealer within a certain distance (I heard 200mi, but could be wrong)... so if a city already has an L&M in it (ie, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver) it would prevent another store from obtaining a dealership in that city.

Re: Mesa Rectifiers

......How can I know if I don't like how they sound through the cab if I've never played them through it?

I think he meant that if you have the Mesa heads and you have the Mesa cab then why haven't you tried them out together? It does seem like the natural thing to do if you have them in the same home.

Re: Mesa Rectifiers

Makes sense. either way I'll keep buying used.
