Is there any tonal difference between black and white limba? Mineral deposits or something, I guess?

I don't know about the tone, but the streaks come from mineral deposits, rotting and fungus. That has to affect the tone somehow - I just know how. But, keep in mind, it's basically the same wood: many times it's the same board. It just looks crappy or cool depending upon where you stand on the subject.

With Hamer, there is always way more of the streaked stuff to throw away than the clean stuff they keep.

Apparently, other manufacturers line up to buy Hamer's rejected wood, as they turn down more than they accept. :saeek:

Pretty guitar, FretWire. Dave McNaught does some fine work. And he's certainly doing some interesting stuff with streaked Limba.

Yeah, it's a nice looking guitar. Not mine though, just stumbled upon that pic when doing some research about limba/black limba.

Keep us posted on your axe, it's coming along great so far...

Here are the latest pics of my guitar. The neck is being carved today.

I think this is what they mean by "hand-crafted."

"Careful there... that's my guitar you're shaping..."

Also, there's been some discussion about me using a Pigtail Wrap-Around tail piece with TonePros studs. I think that's what I'm gonna do.

A luthier that posts fairly often over at guitar.com chimed in about this subject with the following information:

" Limba, AKA Korina is Terminalia superbra. (stop sniggering at the back).

African Mahogany is Khaya ivorensis.

Different species, different genus."

That is correct.

Then again ... African Mahogany isn't a true Mahogany either.


Most of the stuff gets described as Mahogany simply due to similarities with Swietenia or real Mahogany ...

You are a lucky man. I stopped into Gryphon Strings recently and they had this Special Korina Jr there. I fell in love immediately. Blew away every other electric they had in the place.

Oh Man, That is GREAT to see it being built. You will not be unhappy one bit I predict. Evan come tour the Hamer Fan club site, if you haven't, and consider coming to the Annual Open House tour in October. www.hamerfanclub.com It was a blast last year. BTW, Korina is VERY Addictive, I should know I have a '96 Dean Korina Z(Explorer), Dean Czech made Korina V, and an Arpeggio Korina V that is made out of vintage 55+ year old Korina.

I've got a feeling they're thinking "this is the VP for Duncan's personal guitar, we'd better make this SOB the best one we've ever done!" And THAT would be a good thing! LOL This thread is making me want to commission a builder to make a guitar to my specs. It'd probably be something like the new PRS 513....check that one out!

Evan, do you realize you've subconsciously spurned an interest in P-90 guitars this month. It goes in waves....this month it's P-90's.
