My StoneTone block review has begun

Re: My StoneTone block review has begun

I have one objection tho, energy transferred to the bridge, even if not in a destructive manner, will still be energy lost from the strings.

There is a notable transfer of energy occurring, regardless of the block used. While it is possible that more physical energy gets transferred through the bridge into the body with a Stone Tone block installed, that doesn't mean the Stone Tone is somehow stealing more energy from the strings compared to a Brass or Zinc alternative. It could simply be helping to redirect a portion of the existing energy that would otherwise be "lost" to the springs, spring claw, etc. And, if by doing so, stray harmonics and counter-vibrations are minimized, then it could help explain why guitars with the Stone Tone block are noticeably louder acoustically.

I think we're pretty much on the same page, though.

Re: My StoneTone block review has begun

I think I like the idea after all. All my Floyds have big brass blocks- insanely better than zinc, which only sucks the life out of the guitar, but it seesm brass , although I love it, would ring more, imparting its own character, wheres the stone would be neutral allowing more of the woody sound to reverberate. Thats totally unscientific . I think I'll end up getting one.

Brass sounds like ass..

Those big brass blocks just kill a guitar's natural tone....increase string tension...round out/color/compress your string vibration & basically **** thing's up totally lol. Who cares if a guitar sustains for hours when it sounds like **** all the while..

Well that explains why you think the zinc is better.

Go play the didgeridoo....

What do you think your Lo-pro has as a tone block? eh...forget that..what d you think your Lo-pro's entirely made of? Best floating bridge ever made IMO...and yeah...it's poetry in ZINC

Brass is fine when it's the usual FR size (I've got two OFR's with their stock brass blocks) it's only when it's an oversized fat chunk of brass in there that it's got the mass required to **** your tone up...

I have 4 digeridoos here actually.

I think i have one or two big brass blocks one on a flyd and the other on a gfs vintage tremolo. Both seem fins so i don't really hear any problems. One replaced a zinc block i think and it seemed better but i haven't got any tests.

Can't you find zinc blocks on even the ****test floyd rose trems?

Who needs tests...use your ears..

Yeah, they have them (zinc blocks) on the ****tiest..but also on the best (Lo-pro's/Edge's) ...so make of that what you will ;)

Personally I think the big brass blocks are'nt a "plus" at all if you have a nice sounding resonant guitar and know how to set your trem up right. Get everything nice and tight, the right spring tension and the angle against your guitar top right and you'll have all the sustain, tone and resonance you need with having to bugger things up with oversized brass blocks..

You should replace all your ofr brass blocks with $2 china zinc blocks then. :18: If it is like you say the ''holy grail'' material then why not?

haha...well, here's the thing...if I did it would'nt make much of a difference. My Lo-pro's/ZR's/FRS trems have zinc blocks and I've never felt "Wow..wish they had brass blocks like my two OFR's so they could sound as good"

Re: My StoneTone block review has begun

I have one very specific question:

For a 21 or 22 fret guitar, with a single coil-sized pickup positioned beneath the node where the 24th fret would be, select the neck position pickup, play harmonics above the fifth fret. Do these sound as loudly through the amplifier as harmonics from above the twelfth, ninth, seventh or third frets?

By nature, IMO only the 12th fret harmonic of G among the rest of G harmonics, is to create a vibration that can be sensed by the neck pup. That's why all others (G harmonics) sound weak. Nothing to do with the trem or block. 5th fret harmonic is doomed to not create any vibration over the 24th fret node. I am not examining here 3rd fret or other non-G harmonics.

PS
Cool that you edited your original post to correct 22/24 to 21 or 22.

Which is why you cannot be expected to understand. Not to worry.

My remark was not personal. If, as Bruce states, he has no 22 fret HSS guitars, he will never have come across the vanishing harmonic issue.
