New Marshall Amps

Re: New Marshall Amps

The problem with Marshall doing something exciting and new is that they get flogged for it immediately because it either a) is not what a Marshall should be (according to some) or b) doesn't sound like a Marshall (according to some). Same thing if they go and do something based off the classic amps that made them what they are. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. They can't please everybody.

It's a well known fact that a majority of players love the Plexi tones, JMP tones and hot rodded JCM800 tones. From what I'm reading on their web site and in the product manual, this amp is exactly that, all in one package. What's wrong with that? Nothing if you ask me. They're just trying to compete with a heavy market.

I like the fact that they're saying it's a very interactive amp that makes you really work it and use the controls and hands to get "your" tones.

Marshall has always come out with something "new & different" (as different as new amps based on a company's tonal signature can be, that is).

Players wanted more volume..more BOLD sounds......they came out with Plexis...

Players wanted more gain and brighter sounds to cut through better, they came out with Metalfaces..

They wanted a bit more gain, but wanted it a lower volumes, and they came out with JMPs with a Master Volume....

People loved the master volume and wanted more gain, and tighter sounds and channel switching and reverb...out come the 800s...

People wanted even more gain , a hot rodded 800....they come out with the 900s but they screw up in a few key areas, and many people end up hating them.

for 10 years people are saying "new!...different! PLEASSSEEE?????...we want pristine Fender cleans, we want FX loops, we want to be able to do MODERN sounds, and we want VINTAGE type sounds.....

WE WANT LOTS OF FEATURES AND BELLS AND WHISTLES AND BUTTONS AND LIGHTS SO I CAN GO FROM CHARLIE CHRISTIAN TO UBER KILL UNBORN PUPPIES IN A HORRID SACRIFICE TO SATAN METAL O' DEAAAAAATTTTTHHHHHHHH...at the party in my backyard when my mom and dad go away for the weekend......"

So they bring out the...

Different !

and

New!......

THEY DONT SOUND LIKE A PLEXI....THEY DONT SOUND LIKE ANGUS...THEY DONT SOUND LIKE JIMI, THEY DONT SOUND LIKE EDDIE... THEY DONT SOUND LIKE *I* WANT THEM TOO...PLEASE BUILD ME MY PERSONAL MARSHALL..I AM THE ONLY ONE WHO KNOWS WHAT PEOPLE WANT AND LIKE...THEY WILL SELL...LISTEN TO MEEEEEEEEEEE

for the last 10 years people have been begging Marshall to get back to "the classic marshall sounds"....DSL/TSLs suck...900s suck...800s kinda suck..we want VINTAGE...we want a PLEXI...BUT with a fx loop..and more gain on tap like a 800 channel switcher.....oh yeah and it has to do it with a MV...BUT IT HAS TO BE SIMPLE...

they bring it out...and now people are crying..New and Different  The DSL/TSL was for you "new and different" folks . Get it? Unfortunately they were only so-so. What can we conclude? That Marshall does one thing BEST and that is: NOT SO HIGH GAIN PRE 1990 CRUNCH (for the younger high gain freaks who think a dimed Jubilee is a nice mild overdrive for some casual blues-work)

The VMs are for old-farts like me. Please just lemme enjoy seeing the first thing outta marshall in 20 years (that isn't a reissue) that actually has me freaking excited. Theres plenty of new and different elsewhere...run along to your BOO_TEEK manufacturer of choice...

Re: New Marshall Amps

This is exactly what is needed in a gigging amp. This is a true gigging amp, for the working musician, it looks to me. No need for space shuttle control panels, 18 knobs, multiple channels, and gain to gazillion in a gigging amp.

Just a few days a go, I was playing a Blues Breaker and thinking how cool it is to get just the right tones all from the guitar, without "dialing in" everything.

Now, factor in a greater range of gain, and the added flexability of FX loops and reverb, with volume control.

The use of KT66 tubes means authentic Marshall overdrive tone is possible, but with a better clean possible, with the right guitar settings.

Good move Marshall!

Re: New Marshall Amps

Rocker35: Where did you hear the amp and what was being played through it?

Erik, I was at a gig on Sunday watching a UK band called The Answer. Guitarist Paul Mahon has been road testing one on their current tour. I chatted with his roadie after the gig and got a close up view of the new amp. He said they really weren't happy with the amp. The 'high' gain mode was practically unuseable because of feedback problems and the reverb was terrible with it being solid state. He ran it through the new greenback loaded cab and used a mix of Les Pauls and Tele's.

It certainly didn't produce JMP or hot rodded 800 tones and sounded thin and fizzy.

The other bands playing that night were Rose Hill Drive and Roadstar. The guitar player from Rose Hill Drive used an old Plexi and had a fantastic sound - thick and woody like an old Plexi should be while Roadstar used Cornell Plexi's and again had a great sound - more akin to hot rod 800's. I'm afraid that the 'Vintage Modern' just paled in comparison for me. I'll reserve judgement until I get to try one, but for now the verdict is 'dissapointing'.

Jeff, I agree with to a certain extent, but being an even older fart brought up on JMP's and 800's, and having heard one in action, I can only report (at this stage) my dissapointment.

:bigthumb: I hear ya...but you know how marshalls vary....and how some people sound like @$$ through them...even really good players (John Sykes for example sound horrible through marshalls these days..he needs to go back to his Boogies).

I'll wait til I can plug in before I condemn or condone them..for now I'm really excited to try them out...this is basically what *I* have wanted in a marshall for years (though I think I'd prefer EL-34s)

Re: New Marshall Amps

I look forward to trying one out. As some folks have said, different fingers make all the difference in the world. For instance, some players sound great through Boogies, I sound like crap cause I don't know how to properly work one I guess. I used to have that problem with Marshalls, I guess I finally got good, LOL, cause now I'm in love with my Marshalls!

Curious, though about the new/old power tubes, as I've never played a JTM45.

Re: New Marshall Amps

Nice rant Jeff.

I'm still a little unclear on the footswitchable thing, must be kind of like a boost. I'm going to go read the stuff again.

Re: New Marshall Amps

I have no Issue's with PCB...Until they mount the Tubes,Jacks and knobs on them. Just a personal pet peeve of mine. I can't see paying over 1k for ANY amp constructed this way. In the tiny Lil' thing I call my brain...This spells out reliability issue's and in general a nightmare to repair.:smack:

Re: New Marshall Amps

Olin, download the manual for this baby. I just read through it. It's neat to see how they say to use the guitar's volume and tone controls to accomplish your clean, rhythm and lead tones, and boost.

Sounds to me like it's an internally jumped Plexi with a cascode boost option.

The two volume control the two parallel plexi (bright and normal) preamps. It's internally jumpered, so turning down "normal" (what they now call "body") is like just using the bright ("detail") channel.

Changing the "dynamic range" sounds like a cascode boost. So, instead of the two preamps channels running in parallel, the run in parllel, with one channel boosting the other.

Something like this:
http://www.hoffmanamps.com/projects/hotswitch.htm

I've been thinking about building something like this, but first I need to tackle my first Ax84 project...
