I just was at bestbuy to play some new gear that I have been lookin into getting here soon, I played the Marshall mgfx100 and man I feil in love! Great tones not to many knobs and settings to get confused on. This is going to be my first halfstack so I'm pretty stoked I can not wait for uncle sam to pay me!!! I played a epi lp standard witch is what guitar I might be getting aswell. So have anyone of you owned or played these amps?

I've played one before. What type of music do you play? Are you in a band? There's a lot to consider.

Best Buy sells amps now?

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

That amp's not gonna get much love here.

Unless you really, really, really love it and you're certain you can make it work, I'd seriously advise you to take a bit more time to try out some other amps.

This is true man. I don't know what your experience is with other amps in general, but there is much, much, much better out there for the price.

Congratulations!! As long as you love the amp then that's all that matters. Rock out!!:)

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

i used to own the mg30dfx for my bedroom, and boy did that amp sound like straight garbage.

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

I guess it would be a decent beginners stack. I wasn't crazy about it and i think if you look you could find a lot more for the money. I think the issue you you might run into is cutting through at higher volumes. I played with a band last week and both guitars had a marshall MG half stack and they eventually had to mic the cabs to be heard over the drummer and bass because they could not cut through a live mix. and this was a bar who's was max occupancy 80. It's something you should consider. I think if you checked a couple amps at local shops you can get a used tube amp for the same money. I just feel the MG's are amps people grow out of quickley.

Also what kind of punk do you mean? Blink 182 type of sound?

As mentioned, MG Marshalls don't get a lot of love around here, but if it's inspiring you to play better and harder, then it's pushing the right button.

Congrats man!

Oh and about this...

I can assure you those kids had no idea what they were doing.
I've played in pubs (around 80-100 people) with a Marshall MG50 2x12 and with a 1x12 Roland Cube 60, without a mic, and I cut through perfectly, I wasn't even pushing a lot of volume.
Only times I've had to mic my amp was in a Hotel hall (very large bouncy room, 400+, required an even spread) and the times we've played at larger halls.

Seriously, how can you not be heard with ANY half stack in a place with less than 200 people?

Well, what kind of sounds are you going for? I know you play punk but there's a lot of different kinds of punk with a lot of different signature sounds. Pop-punk? Old-school classic punk? Hardcore? Edging on metalcore?

I remember you saying you liked Greenday. Is that the kind of sound you're going for?

What's your price range and are you willing to buy used? For the price of a new MG stack you can get a sweet tube amp for a great price on the used market.

You need an amp that you can play live? I'm assuming you do because you're about to buy a goddamn half-stack but ya never know.

Narrow it down, man. We can make suggestions for you but only if we know where you want to be going.

Yeah they were kids but i don't think i explained it how i meant to. They could be heard. But they were Indistinguishable in the mix. I felt they were very muddy amps, compressed, and the lead channel was one dimensional. That for $600 you could probably get a better amp. It pays to do the research before getting one. If you're drop dead in love with the amp get it.

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

Also you do NOT need a halfstack. Have fun lugging that sucker around. I'm cool with my 212 combo that is just as or louder than some halfstacks.

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

I saw a mesa rectoverb used for 650, i would choose that hands down over the mg

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

I don't have a problem with the tone of solid state and modeling amps and I think they're great for the "at home" player because the tone is consistant regardless of volume so you can play at crazy hours without disturbing the neighbors and family.

However, they just don't play nice with a tube amp and your tone will get swallowed up whole never to be heard from again. Jam with someone who owns a tube amp and you may as well turn the guitars volume knob to Zero because that's how much a chance you have of being heard in the mix. I've had it happen to me when I owned solid stat/modeling gear and I'm doing it right now with the other guitarist in the group I jam with.

FYI - he's now shopping for a tube amp!!!

+1 You don't need a H/S. But i'd have to say that while they're dimensionally smaller, I've lugged a 5150 combo 2x12 that probably weighed more then any cab i've used. Plus i like having the Head/Cab thing cause i could throw it on a 4x12, or 2x12, or 1x12. My options are open. anyway it's a good thing to consider other amps besides half stacks.

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

Half stack for me = easier to lug around than a 2x12 combo.

I don't need one but mine sure is tasty. I'm actually looking to get an open 2x12 to go under my half stack. 6x12!!!! If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing.

I would skip the mg but if you like it then go for it.

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

it would be pretty punk if you got it. catch my drift?
