NGD...I have a woody..

More wrong notes for your entertainment...

Then go watch Marty Friedman's interview with Nick from Grim Reaper/Sweetwater on YT from a couple days ago....See how much he (MF) luv's 'playing scales and being in the box all day long (makes for uber entertaining guitar playing, especially for dorks w/o a shred of individuality or imagination) ...and the key to having your own identity as a guitar player...and yeah ..then just listen to him play....(and learn from it) :D

I liked how Marty said choose how you want to represent yourself. Rather than having only the theory dictate what music you play. Ultimately that's the goal of all musicians I would think. To be able to accurately express something meaningful. However, he is obviously educated and plays using the fundamentals. He's not just hitting whatever notes and spinning it out of the air, he plays utilizing his theory knowledge base but uses it creatively.

hahha..yeah w/e man..

he basically says ignore the the theory and play from within...

Since I don't know/use/or give a hoot for theory I just skip that step an go on directly to 'playing from within' ...makes things even quicker/easier :lmao:

He didn't say ignore the theory. He said don't let theory be the only thing that dictates what you play. He said be more creative than only thinking about the theory. Then when he demonstrated what to play he played using theory, he just did it creatively. At 4:15 when he said give me an A minor he played an A minor arpeggio with a few added notes. Then when he went to explain further he started talking in more theoretical terms talking about taking a theme and developing it and call and response. Theory + creativity. Not just whatever + creativity.

.

His basic shtick was do your own thing...be original ..don't follow the norm.. stuff like that. In other words "Get your head out of the book & stop playing like a fukkin' dork"

But he also said, in other words..."Don't just noodle around on a guitar like a 'fukkin' dork', learn some theory so you can play and create like a pro who knows what they're doing".

It's really all about knowing AND feeling. One is not much good without the other.

Look, he really stresses this idea of "intent". Making a decision as to what notes you're going to play BEFORE you actually play them. In photography this is called "previsualization"...understanding what the final photograph will look like before you release the shutter.

You can't make the decision to follow or break the rules until you actually know the rules. Once the "knowledge"/theory becomes intrinsic, and you don't need to consciously think about it, THEN you can play with feeling and it will actually be meaningful...and beautiful.

It took me 50 years of playing like a dork until it finally hit me that in order to play "good" I needed to know some theory. I kick myself every day because I never learned how to play what I wanted to play.

Yes, playing only with theory (and no feeling), or fitting in 500 notes per measure like a lot of shredders do these days, isn't very appealing or lasting. But playing with lots of feeling and emotion, but hitting the "wrong" notes, is also not very endearing nor enduring. It's very rare to find a truly great guitarist that doesn't have and master both.

I really wish I had a good knowledge of theory. And I wish I had the coordination of a shredder. I have the feeling, but I need more theory and coordination. I'll never be more than mediocre without them.

I think he just said do your own thing ..that's what having "creativity" means..

Think I'm doing 100% fine w/ just the one...as for the other... not my thing.

But then we've been there so many times before.. :sword:

Yeah, ..and one does'nt need theory to have "intent " at all. All you need to do (as he also stresses) is to listen to yourself play as your playing ..that's how You (I) know what needs to come next. Theory need'nt have anything t do w/ it at all...it vcan be done with your (my) ears..quicker and more efficiently imo..

Everyone has their own way of going about things (or should)....

First of all, you are absolutely undeniably wrong.

Second, it is abundantly clear that you actually believe what you just said.

Absolutely NOT. He never said that nor did he ever imply that. He has forgotten more theory than you or I will ever learn.

And for good reason.. :bigthumb:

All you need to do is LOOK at him play ....more than any other plyer I can think of ..dude plays from his heart..
