NGD...I have a woody..

O all knowing one....realize that there are other far more ancient forms of sophisticated musical traditions that predate western classical (or any other western) musical traditions by literally thousands of years in which the concept of "written musical theory" does not (and never has) exist(ed) and everything is done by ear & based on improvisation (sound familiar? :lmao:).

Something humbling to keep in mind next time you feel like pontificating to me about "wrong notes", the "right" & "wrong" way to go about things and the absolute essentiality of musical theory for playing anything at all worthwhile.

Now if you don't mind, lets move back on topic and you tell tell me how much you like and appreciate my woody (and wish you could perhaps one day get one yourself) :bigthumb:

Yeah, can't hear those devices sorry..

As for being 'superior' you come into this thread which has NOTHING to do w/ theory ..only to tell me how I play "wrong" notes.

I mean I love Marty Freiedman and I'm sure he has plenty of theoretical knowledge (which in his own words...the trick is to not follow so you don't sound like an automaton) and greatthat's his way of doingthings as he says don't copy me ..do it your way..which is what I do..you should try it sometime..

Play something like this ..post it here and tell us how much time you had to 'think theoretically' about your next note :bigthumb:

(I like the pretty thumbnails)

I do have to admit that at least 25% of the notes you are playing are within the key signature.

Sounds good, but honestly I could'nt listen to it more than halfway through. Personally I would just tap instead of stretching like that all the time (tendonitis waiting to happen) and also it got a bit repetitive a couple mins in.

i think one problem I have with jazz dudes is the rigidity (insistence on picking every note/never bending a note..I mean what's with that ****??) I feel like giving him my woody for a while and telling to knock himself out doing some divebombs/squealies/flutters or something.... But yeah, everyone has their own thing going...so be it as it may...

Simple little soft rock track w/my Ibby SA/Randall T2.. (middle/neck notch position)

Yeah those stretches don't look so good. I ain't traumatizing my hand like that.

and also it got a bit repetitive a couple mins in.

The form is AABA (plus an intro) like a lot of jazz tunes so the same part repeats a lot.

I don't get why the foos don't bend.

Skip around this video and let me know what you think of this foo and if he needs to get his head out of a book or not lol.

Whooaah..and it's back to pervy 'ol mooby again!

I guess better the theory books than some of the other books he looks the type to be sticking his head into :lmao:

Don't know....but I always judge a book by it's cover :laugh2:

You know what they say...the eyes are the window to the soul..

My wife was like that too..

In fact (true story) the last time you posted up mooby doing fast finger exercises. I was sitting at my comp watching him do his thing and my wife walked in & glanced at what I was watching and said "ugh, put that off, the guy gives me the creeps"

So I did (I'd had enough of his finger exercises by then anyway) :lmao:

Haha. He seems ok to me interpersonally. He's just fat. Everyone has weird stuff in their personal life.

Eh, I'm not overly slim these days either... :p

Just pulling your leg. I don't know the guy from a bar of soap anyway.

The story about my wife was true though....

She was really into "vibes" and a lot of new-age stuff & she did say that :laugh2:

Nothing wrong with vibes. I like comparing and contrasting vibes I get from situations or people and what is objectively observable from them.

Yeah, I know...I pretty much follow my instincts always....can't help it. That's the way I am. Impulsive. :D

I guess that gets carried over to my guitar playing as well......

Sweet! I just bought the 30th(?) Anniversary LP edition of P&W the other day myself :p

I first heard Vai back in the mid 80's I guess it was with Alcatrazz when he took over from Yngwie who had already just blown my socks off!

Been a fan ever since. Especially of him w/ Alcatrazz. His Passion & Warfare record which is my #1 fave instrumental record (if you don't take into account Yngwie's first one which is technically not all-instrumental) & his ones with DLR especially 'Eat 'Em and Smile'.

I've kept in touch through the years but those early ones are where it's at for me (excluding the Zappa stuff which I could'nt ever get into....too way out there for me.....Zappa in general.)

I will hopefully be watching him play in December :bigthumb:

I mainly know Steve Vai via Frank Zappa as I am a big Zappa fan. It's only been more recently that I've become familiar with Vai's solo work, which is incredible in its own right.

Vai is listed on several Zappa album liner notes as having performed "Stunt guitar" or "Impossible guitar"

Vai's telling of his Zappa audition is hilarious. It's on YouTube.
