Orange Micro Terror / Tiny Terror / Dark Terror for shows !?

Re: Orange Micro Terror / Tiny Terror / Dark Terror for shows !?

The issue with using a TT or DT live isnt will it be loud enough its will it have enough headroom. I myself for good high gain tones dont like the sound of a small amp on 10 its too compressed the bottom is fuzzy and indistinct. YMMV but its something to think about.

There is also alot of truth in this too.

The main reason I didn't get a Tiny Terror myself a while back was that when the gain and volume were up higher, nothing too br00talz as I don't play that sort of music, the amp just seemed to flub out and lose all definition. I never tried it with a Treble Booster etc to see if that would've helped as the shop I was in didn't stock anything suitable.

Re: Orange Micro Terror / Tiny Terror / Dark Terror for shows !?

I have a Micro Terror that I use as a backup amp live incase anything happens to my SLO or Quick Rod and it's more than upto this task.

At gig volume through my oversized 2x12 cab with V30s there is practically zero clean headroom (gain needs to be about halfway up top get the volume) but as I don't really use clean sounds with my band it's not too much of a problem. I also find it to take ODs and Boost pedals well so I can still get some tonal variety from it.

Would I use it as my main gigging/live amp: No. Whilst it sounds good, especially for what it is, it's obviously not upto the tonal standard of my other amps (I don't mean or want to sound like a snob but I can't think of another way to describe it). Would I rely on it to give me a very useable tone live if a valve or something died in my main amp: Yes, most definitely.

EDIT: I've just seen your older thread about a half stack for metal and think that of the 3 amps mentioned here the Dark Terror would probably be your best option gain wise. I agree with the suggestion of 5150/6505 etc as being probably the 'best' amp for the tones you mentioned in the other thread.

The thing us, I'm not a tone freak at all. I love the sound of the micro terror tho! As long ad I can be at full gain, and be heard, I'm good with this amp. I'm gonna try rent it, and bring it to band practice, and just test the volume.

But is the volume your good with the micro terror at enough for your gigs? If you love it high up your gold but if you've only demo'd it on 3 or 4 might want to try it full up just to make sure it does the same at stage volume. Also keep in mind if your constantly pushing an amp hard it will wear through tubes faster. Not a huge deal but something to consider with a valve amp.

Re: Orange Micro Terror / Tiny Terror / Dark Terror for shows !?

I need gain, gain and more gain :P

So you're saying a 15 watt head output into a 120 watt cab is good for live shows ?

more speakers wont make your amp louder. It just means the speakers will be sharing the (fairly modest) 15 watt load.
More efficient speakers will make you louder - but only by a couple of db.
Differently voiced speakers can also make your guitar seem louder by being more pronounced in the highs and upper mids.

15 watts is enough to gig with....
depending on how much headroom you need and depending on how loud your drummer plays.
Some rock drummers are as loud as hell. Some are quite moderate.

with 15 watts you wont get much headroom (if any) which means two things:
1. You will have barely any clean tones...but that might be okay of you want to rock out.
2. You wont have a lot of low end...which also might be okay depending on how you want to fit into the band mix. People use higher wattage amps usually to get a thumping low end. The amount of low end you want or need is a matter of personal preference.

I've played outdoor festivals with a blues junior using a fairly clean sound with no problems - but the drummer is pretty tame cos it is a jazz trio. I've played in rock bands where the drummer hits the skins like hades himself too. I'd reckon i would not be able to hear myself in that situation even with 15 watts cranked. Sure the FOH guy can mic you up and you will sound good out front...but you might have trouble hearing yourself onstage unless the FOH guy gives you some guitar in the foldback. This is unlikely because usually the singer of the band wants nothing but vocals coming back at their ears and unless you are playing the kind of gigs where everybody gets their own foldback/monitor mix then its probably not going to happen.

So i guess in the end, the answer lies in how loud the rest of your band plays - especially the drummer.

I'm gonna take it to Rehearsal Factory (just a jam place we pay to play at) and I'm gonna crank it to 10..and see where that takes me. Yeah the tube stuff is okay, it's a hybrid amp, so not as many tubes to replace.

I don't need any clean headroom, just pure metal sound 99% of the time. 1% is me playing clean at home. My drummer is decently loud so I'll test it rehearsal factory, like I Said above.

make sure to try it out in a band setting if you plan to use it as a practice amp with your band. you may find you do not like how the low end grunt gets gobbled up by the bassist and bass drum. a great sound engineer can find a place for it in its 20 watts of glorious solid state hybrid power that you are seeking, if you have an excellent PA at your venue you plan to play at.

I love a trebly guitar sound, so that might end up being okay with me. I'll test it in a band setting for sure !!

More speakers WILL make your sound louder. Doubling the number of speakers increases volume the same as doubling amp power (both give 3db more volume)
Going from 89db to 92db speakers would be a significant increase (again as much as doubling amp power)

My upgraded 5w valve junior into a 4x12 was loud enough to gig with.
