I tried the halfstack and was blown away by how good it sounded. crisp, articulate distortion, and awesome cleans. i was thinking about purchasing the combo, but they don't stock them around here. anyone have one of these and know about it? does it sound as good as the 1/2 stack? any sound samples? much appreciated, thanks.

Re: Peavey 6505 Combo

I traded in my mesa boogie dual rec which I was not happy with at all. I took home the jvm, which was really nice, and extremely versatile. But for 600 bucks less I went for the 6505+ for that extra solid crunch. Holy crap, am I happy with this beast. Rock N' roll city.

Re: Peavey 6505 Combo

Yeah, that combo is beeeeastly! It'll sound pretty much exactly like the stack, just with 2 less speakers and half the wattage. Same design as the head, biased slightly warmer for a less 'sterile' distortion tone, and with reverb built in.

It also weighs 85 pounds - heavy little bastard!

Re: Peavey 6505 Combo

ha. I knew that thing had to weighed more than any head I've ever picked up. That or I'm just getting weaker.

Re: Peavey 6505 Combo

By the way I heard the tubes that come with it are cheap china made crap, and if you replace them the thing sounds even nicer.

Re: Peavey 6505 Combo

thanks for all the input. how does it do with in-between tones? the reviews i read are basically that it's a one trick pony for metal. contrary to that, the 6505 head i tried was impressive clean, bluesy, and dirty. what do you think of it as an overall meta/rock/blues amp?

Re: Peavey 6505 Combo

From what I can tell so far it's not the most versatile amp, but it's far from the least. I'm not the biggest blues player. But I dialed in some decent hendrix type tones pretty quickly. It needed work, but I didn't mess with that too much. I don't even play metal really. I'm more of a rock guy myself, and I like how raw, and crunchy this amp is while retaining clarity, and good tone. Lots of good rock bands like blindside, turbonegro use this head. The clean channel was a bit dirty, but I didn't get to play with it much yet either. I've heard good things about using the gt-8 with the 4 cable method using the eq, and compressor for cleaning it up greatly. I'm gonna try that later. But what you're looking for I would definitely check out the marshall jvm it's a versatile creature. Within seconds with those 4 channels you can nail those great cleans, perfect hendrix blues tones, get solid rock crunch, and good metal shred. The only thing I personally liked more about the 6505 besides the price difference is the distortion vs. the jvms higher gain od channels. Not saying anything bad about the jvms high gain channels because they were amazing, and I'm sure most people would say they like them much better, but the 6505 distortion was more what I was looking for personally. On the downside the marshall had a way better clean channel, and was way more versatile, and %*&^ were those tubes hot!
