Just curious how everyone prefers their setup and what style of music they use it for. I feel like mine is pretty high (pictured below). Using 13-62 gauge strings. Style is stoner rock for the most part. I am very happy with the playability and results Edit: I chose medium and high in the poll because I wasn't sure what mine counted as

I like to bend under strings, so I set my strings so my pinky can slide under them without too much effort. It really depends on the guitar though, mostly it's instinctive.

That looks off the chart! mine is pretty low although i like to think its average.

Re: Poll: Action, how do you roll?

I like to set the strings on the bass side fairly moderate but on the treble side they get in closer. Some would not like that cuz it ends up not following the radius perfectly but it works for me

Re: Poll: Action, how do you roll?

Yeah that's definitely a stark difference. What style of music do you generally play?

Well I like to quote myself from jazz to metal(lica) but generally speaking i tend to go between blues-blues rock with occasional hard rock. I am in no means a shredder so its not that i need low action, i just can not play comfortable with high action.
I think the difference is mostly in rythm vs lead playing, although i tend to riff more than play real lead solos.

Whatever "low medium high" is....

I'm a fan of low. I'm cool with a little fret buzz. I like to feel the wood under my fingers. I like the low wide Gibson frets.

Re: Poll: Action, how do you roll?

i would've said "moderate", but then i saw your action, shay
i'll go with "low"

Re: Poll: Action, how do you roll?

i like the strings to ring clearly and i play pretty hard. i put medium in the poll but my medium action is probably someone elses high. i dont want any fret buzz and i dont switch guitars for slide, i just go back and forth on the same guitar

Re: Poll: Action, how do you roll?

I have had to switch to much lower action, my left hand has been having some cramping and numbness issues. I really need to check my technique, and possibly switch to lighter strings.

Re: Poll: Action, how do you roll?

High action and thin strings, as I do a lot of blues-style bends. It takes longer to develop speed with a high action, but it can be done. I stuck with it as I love to bend. At this point, I can no longer play a low-action guitar. If I'd have been playing mostly chords over the years, I'd have had a lower action and thicker strings.

Re: Poll: Action, how do you roll?

To be fair that guitar is usually tuned between drop C and drop B flat. The other SG has a lower action and lighter strings for standard and D

Somewhere around 6/64" on the bass and 4/64" on the treble, but that's more on the acoustic side. I'd like to get the electrics a little lower.

On a Strat, if the nut height is correct, the neck relief is correct and the saddles are bottomed out, is shimming/micro tilting the neck the next step to lower action? (When I floated the American trem it raised the action)

Re: Poll: Action, how do you roll?

I start by setting up 11's at the factory recommended settings (which are usually for 9's). I do that just to get a rough "baseline" setting. Then I usually end up going up about 1.5x to 2x that height. For instance, if Fender sez 1.6 mm, that's where I start. I poke around there just to see how it plays. But usually by the time it is set up "properly" for me, I am at about 2.5 to 3 mm. This is all standard tuning.

Re: Poll: Action, how do you roll?

Interesting to see that some are truely measuring all this. I go all around feeling, playing, adjusting, going back and forth for the best allround feel.

We are probably doing the same thing, but measuring after the fact, just out of curiosity.
