PRS SE single cut P90 vs. SG classic P90?

Re: PRS SE single cut P90 vs. SG classic P90?

I love that and recall asking about it sometime last year, IIRC. People were questioning the build quality, and eventually my attention was steered toward an Edwards LP gold top with P-90s. I'd sooner get one of those than the Gibson LP Jr., but the one you link to is such a beauty.

Edwards are real nice, especially like the Sykes I was able to play around with for a while. I was tempted to by one of those until the white LP Studio I currently have just whispered buy me. I know some will bash me for this, but a gold top makes my eyes hurt and stomach queasy. That color reminds me of a stomach virus enticed poopy diaper my daughter let loose with many years ago. I can't stand the site of anything gold colored since. :barf:

What quality issues did you come across?

I never bought the Edwards, because I decided to get an SG Classic instead. (I already had a Les Paul, so I figured it would be good to get a new model as well as a new pickup configuration—two birds, one stone.)

I meant to say what issues were brought up with the LP Jr.?

Oh, I see. I never bought the LP Junior, but my understanding is Edwards' quality control is higher than Gibson's (i.e., you're more likely to get consistently high quality from Edwards vs. Gibson). Also, I'd rather have something with two P-90s—one in the neck and one in the bridge—than just the one in the bridge.

Just throwing this out there, how about the PRS SE One? It's a little like the junior, but I think it's a beast.

Re: PRS SE single cut P90 vs. SG classic P90?

Never played the SE one. If I go with PRS probably stick with the two pickup single cut. Something doesn't look right, maybe the pickguard.

I LOVE CHUNKY FLAKE!

Really, who doesn't love a chunky flake?

Yeah I get what you are saying. People either thing PRS guitars are to fancy to play, or find them to ugly to own.

Get the SG already! :cool2:

Re: PRS SE single cut P90 vs. SG classic P90?

No, I like the looks of the single cut SE with two pickups. Don't like the looks of the SE One. I'll be back in the shop Tuesday and play the singlecut one more time. Then I'll either buy it or have them get the SG for me. I think I've ruled out the LP Jr. now.

Re: PRS SE single cut P90 vs. SG classic P90?

I’m lucky enough to own both a single cutaway SE Soapbar and an SG Classic. Both really great guitars for the money!

I bought one of the original single cutaway SE Soapbars new when they came out and liked it so well that I wanted to order another one as a spare. By then, they’d been taken off the market due to the totally ridiculous lawsuit by Gibson. As soon as the double cutaway Soapbar II came out, I bought one of them too. The necks are the same size-wise and both are very fun axes of good quality that I really enjoy playing. The pots on both crapped out after little use and had to be replaced with better quality CTS units. The pickups sound nice – full & gutsy with a solid clarity and nice tonal range.

This last October, I stopped by a Guitar Center and tried out the SG Classic. I’d heard they were stopping production on them and I wanted to check them out before they were all gone. They had 3 and I was amazed at the consistency between them. The necks were all the same size-wise. I tended to like the heaviest one (still pretty light) the best. It seemed to have a little edge in the sustain department over the other two. I ended up buying it, and although I’m sure I would’ve been happy with any of the 3, this particular one has to be one of the best feeling and sounding guitars I’ve ever had. I just can’t keep my hands off of it. It’s neck is full & round, but it plays faster than anything in my arsenal. The intonation was spot on and it just rings out in every register.

None of these guitars were set up when I originally got them from the dealers, but each only needed the bridge height adjusted and minor truss rod tweaks to become ace players.

I love all my guitars and my mahogany p90 planks are dear to my heart because I originally started playing long ago on a 1965 SG Special and they remind me of my old SG.

If I had to choose only one of these 3 – the SE Soapbars or the SG Classic, it would be the SG hands down. It simply sounds better, plays better, feels better, and will retain it’s value better than the SEs. In fact, I noticed recently that Guitar Center doesn’t advertise them anymore and Musician’s Friend is out of them and just says they have been discontinued. If you can still pick up one somewhere (even used), it’ll be an investment in tone that you’ll likely never regret!

Great first post! Welcome to the forum, FastNeck. What's your background? How long have you been playing? What styles do you prefer? What do you have for gear besides these three guitars?

Re: PRS SE single cut P90 vs. SG classic P90?

The SG Classic has a big fat vaguely D-shaped neck and I, for one, have always believed that the neck is where tone lives.

Re: PRS SE single cut P90 vs. SG classic P90?

i ever so slightly shaved my sg's neck:D
personally, i'd rather have an sg with phatcats than an sg classic with p90s, and i don't really car for prs in the first place.

+1. SG Classic all the way.
