Question about pairing an amp w/ a cab

Got a quick question. I'm relatively new to the world of half stacks. I'm considering getting a jtm45 later this year. I see a common combo is it paired with the 1960tv cab. However, i am a bit intrigued by the fact friedman offers a cab with both v30s and greenbacks stock.

Do you think it would be bad for me to pair a jtm45 with such a cab?

I'm also concerned about the fact i'll need to crank the jtm45 to get true breakup. Would the 1960tv (100w) cab break up at lower volumes than the friedman (170w) cab or shouldn't it really work like that?

Would the jtm45 be louder through either cab?

I understand this amp is pretty loud. Trying to find a way to manage it at reasonable vols.

Thanks!

Greenbacks are less efficient but they do breakup earlier. If you are worried about too much volume, a half stack isn't a great way to go. Have you considered a 2 x 12? You should be OK with a JTM and a couple of Greenbacks in a 2x12 and it would knock off a few DB. You could also go with a 4x12 with an input jack dish/plate that allows you to run in mono or stereo. You wouldn't actually be running stereo but it would allow you to only run 2 of the speakers in the cabinet at one time if you want. Marshall has one and there are other brands as well. There is no real way to "manage" that amp at reasonable volumes ... depending on your idea of reasonable volume. That sound is about getting the power tubes cooking. That doesn't mean it cant sound good at lower volumes, with a pedal, or a master volume (I wouldn't install a MV on a vintage JTM45). It's all about what you want and like. I'm perfectly happy with my "45" using a master volume for reasonable levels at home, getting grind from the pre-amp and phase inverter. But, that's not the same as cranked Marshall tone.

Hey. I've heard good things about attenuation. Considering it. It can just be expensive.

The idea of having to crank it for gain on occasion when jamming outback doesn't necessarily scare me. inside, i will most likely pair with a pedal. I'm thinking if the greenbacks breakup sooner, they seem like the most appropriate for me. I do have a nice 2x12 cab, but unfortunately i opted for a vertical version and not horizantal so it's not the most practical (one of the stupider things i've done). I'm thinking i want to try 4x12 for the time being. The 1960tv may also make more sense for me incase i decide i need to split with it later.

I've always associated the head wattage with volume (yes, i realize double wattage doesn't necessarily mean double volume). but never really thought much about the cab, which prompted a lot of my questions.

Thanks for the info, guys. I appreciate it.

They aren't that expensive really, at least if you can find used one. Around 100-150 euro here.
