Relic'd guitars, Love them or hate them?

Re: Relic'd guitars, Love them or hate them?

It's humanly impossible to me to hate'em more than I do.

That's that together with all the fake "period correct" appointments in newly-build instruments.

You asked... ;)

Re: Relic'd guitars, Love them or hate them?

Depends how it's done in my opinion. If it just looks destroyed, no. But if the control the rate of fake decay, the it's okay I guess. I prefer aged hardware over aged paint jobs, though.

Then get ready for the DOUBLE relics. They are designed to look like a bad refinishing job that has worn down to the orginal paint.

i dont mind them if they are done well but there are plenty that look like crap. i dont baby my guitars at all so they eventually get dinged up and if i have them long enough start to look relic'd or worn but they earn it

I'd rather put the wear on a new guitar from years of my own use.

Yup, I prefer to relic with time and use. But it is nice to think I could re-acquire that one that got away and re-live my past. I got a Roadworn Jazz Bass because of that.

A friend of mine always freaks out when his guitar gets scratched or dinged but I always view it as a part of owning it and after years of owning a guitar it should show signs of wear

Most players exhibiting that kind of behavior, generally speaking, are not able to play anything worth hearing. Did somebody say "blues lawyer"? ;)

I couldn't care less; I'm not the one using'em or buying'em either... and you CAN'T MAKE ME!!!! ;)

Re: Relic'd guitars, Love them or hate them?

Meh, I don't have time for it. I buy old guitars and want them to look as clean as possible, not the other way around.

Re: Relic'd guitars, Love them or hate them?

I like the one i did. It isnt really worn everything is smooth and nice with no wood exposed.

What tremolo is that? Don't think I've ever seen one like it.

Re: Relic'd guitars, Love them or hate them?

For me a good guitar is a good guitar regardless of new, relic'd or beaten. If it's well constructed, plays and sounds good I can generally live with it so long as it appeals to me.... hell I got past the G&L and Tyler headstock! There are some that really don't float my boat though, for example there are a lot of Suhr guitars I have seen on the net and the aged/ modified finish looks bloody awful.

Re: Relic'd guitars, Love them or hate them?

I kinda like a Relic that's been done well..... I mean I wouldn't do it to any my guitars that I currently own because they're way too nice and honestly way too expensive for it to be anywhere near a reasonable thing to do!!!

If it was a old MIM or something that had the proper work put into it so it gets the "feel" as well as the "look", I guess that could be pretty cool???

Re: Relic'd guitars, Love them or hate them?

Ah yes, we still do see a smattering of people who cannot understand that relicing is simply a finish option or artistic choice.

Its certainly 'very 70's' to still think that these things have to be 'earned'.

But there is certainly playing merit to having a neck smoothed down so it plays really well.

Re: Relic'd guitars, Love them or hate them?

I like to have nice-looking equipment. Mine will age on their own in due time. If one gets too ratty, it's time to refinish and I'll enjoy the newness all over again. I don't have a big issue with it but I just don't see the point. Each to his own, though. If you like it, go for it. It does have one advantage, though: you don't have to be careful with your equipment because it already looks tired. All that said, a classic guitar that's truly worn from use does have a character all its own.

Re: Relic'd guitars, Love them or hate them?

Relics are for well heeled wannabe's that want to appropriate the cool of someone that's actually gigged their gear. Paying extra for something new that looks like it was played with sandpaper arm guards and drug behind a car for a mile to look like you're the real deal is ridiculous. I guess the Doctors and Lawyers need something to make themselves look legit in their room full of $6K true historics that rarely come out of a case.
