Rosewood or maple fingerboard?

Re: Rosewood or maple fingerboard?

Birdseye maple is a beautiful look for a neck...that being said I love playing rosewood, all my fretboards are rosewood :)

Re: Rosewood or maple fingerboard?

I've owned all three, and I love them all. I prefer dyed ebony (ala ESP) to undyed, and crappy, faded, neglected rosewood is horrible, but nice dark rosewood is beautiful. Tone-wise, I found rosewood slightly less bright than maple and ebony, which can be good or bad. Maple-neck strats with single-coils are too bright for me, even though it's a nice shimmery brightness.

I prefer undyed rosewood. I think it looks much better than dyed. A nice strat with a maple neck is a thing of sonic and visual beauty to me. I like maple necks on strats much more than Rosewood. For some reason I have a tough time finding a nice maple strat neck with jumbo frets. Seems like rosewood necks get the good frets and the maple ones get the vintage frets that drive me nuts.

Re: Rosewood or maple fingerboard?

I gotta go with maple for the strats. I'm sick of rosewood board strats, even though they're killin. Maple looks mad cool, especially when you got a one peice FLAMED maple neck like me hehehe. I like the finish on the board, it has kinda thinned out since I bought the thing by just playing it to death. Many people have a problem with it, I don't. I also like it unfinished and all relic'ed and screwed up looking. I kinda like the snappy tone a little better, even though it don't make too much of a difference. Looks beast tho

I'm still debating whether to build my telecaster with a rosewood or maple board, but I'll probably wind up with rosewood for this particular project...

Re: Rosewood or maple fingerboard?

As a geezer, I really have preferred the unsealed feel of either ebony or rosewood to maple. Someone above mentioned the word "cozy", and I think that is an apt description.

I have not played a maple fretboard as a personal player in years. I would like to add though, that I could change my opinion in a heartbeat. My hands are not near as "oily" as they were in my youth! I don't have string killing "acid sweat", but sealed maple just seemed to leave hand sweat on the fretboard all gooey, with no place to go.

doesnt matter. Your fingers never actually touch the board anyhow. If they are, youre fretting out and the neck is either twisted or you need frets.Maple for a nearly indistinguishably brighter tone offf the attack.Ebony seems to have the most noticeable sustain and pick attack clarity.
There are other more exotic woods , but I dont think they are much diffeent than the big three.
I'd be more concerned with the finish ont he back of the neck..especially if its natural.

I have maple, rosewood and ebony and I like them all. Maple's got a crisper sound to my ears with a lot more snap to it than rosewood, but in the wrong body it can be too bright (same with ebony).

Re: Rosewood or maple fingerboard?

I've got maple, rose, and ebony and my fave is probly ebony, purely feelwise. The nitro maple neck is pretty awesome tho. Lately, I've began to dislike my rosewood boards, they're just not smooth. I detailed the shiz outta every axe I own with their last string changes and the rosewood doesn't feel as good or smooth as the ebony ones.
