Same speakers, same cabinet, different tolex...different sound

Same speakers, same cabinet, different tolex...different sound

The 1936 has G12T-75 speakers. What is the jubilee cab using? I didn’t hear him specifically say in the video. Might have missed it though.
Fwiw, I liked the jubilee cab better.

Re: Same speakers, same cabinet, different tolex...different sound

This is a 1936v w/ the vintage speakers. Marshall started offering the v recently in 2x12 form.

Did you even watch the video?

Listen to that JB juicy tone.

Re: Same speakers, same cabinet, different tolex...different sound

I think the speakers themselves got mislabeled. No way those are the same speakers.

Re: Same speakers, same cabinet, different tolex...different sound

This is a well-documented phenomenon and the primary reason Green amps sound better than other ones.

You capitalized Green, which is a brand.

That's not what we're talking about here, though.

I could guarantee that the speakers in the 1936V cab are labeled wrong. They have all the characteristics of the G12T-75s that make me want to use cabs carrying them as kindling.

Re: Same speakers, same cabinet, different tolex...different sound

Yes the "1936V" has that G12T75 scooped sound. Mislabeled speaker....interesting and most plausible.

Could it be break in discrepancy? Maybe the jube cab was more broken in?

Re: Same speakers, same cabinet, different tolex...different sound

cables
one had a small 18 gauge cable
the other had a 12

Re: Same speakers, same cabinet, different tolex...different sound

If they were t75 the cab would be a few pounds lighter than the v30 cab.
Maybe cl80,,,,,,,,,,they do sound scooped compared to v30, and would result in equal cab weights.

Nah, breaking in a speaker doesn't wildly change its character.

Re: Same speakers, same cabinet, different tolex...different sound

I thought it was going to be about one cab that was re-Tolexed and sounded different afterward.
Why not brown Tolex for that classic famous Variac tone?

Yes, but my Green Matamps also sound better than my Orange Matamps. Explain THAT, "Mister" ScienTIST.

Really? Are these specs on the Marshall site? For that relatively low wattage I doubt it makes that kind of difference.

Good call!

I bet the wire inside your pickups is orange. Good match for a green amp.
For an orange amp you need pickups with green wire like these Sentells...

Re: Same speakers, same cabinet, different tolex...different sound

Just listened with decent ear buds in. The sound isn't all that much different between cabinets when listening with only the right ear bud. The big difference is only heard in the left channel. I'm just plugging into my old Creative Labs volume control's headphone jack. No high end stuff and it's old so maybe it's my audio. But, going off of that, my vote is for recording shenanigans.

Re: Same speakers, same cabinet, different tolex...different sound

Circuits, baby. Circuits.

Ehh they're the same circuits too, except my Green is 120w and the Orange is 80w, and the Green has more gain on tap. This is obviously a function of the color of the tolex.
