I have the 490's in this guitar...If I put in Seth's...so do I need to change Caps or Pots...or just swap out the pups?

if you have 300k pots, i would swap them out for 500k. other than that, id just put the pups in and see where you are at unless you dont do your own work. if you have to pay someone then i might think about having it all done at once.

I had a Seth in the bridge of my LP Trad Pro, with a different volume pot (don't ask which brand or value, the tech didn't tell me) and the without any changes to the caps. Sounded pretty muddy. I'd look into changing the caps if I were you.

Ditto on 500K pots. And me, I'd do the 50's mod to help retain treble when the volume pots are turned way down.

If the caps in your guitar are cheapie ceramic disc caps, I'd changed them to .02 Sprague Orange Drops because they're prettier :) and because they might make a slight improvement in tone. Even if they don't, at least you'll know you have first rate tone caps in your guitar.

Definately change outy the pots to 500K- the 300K's are total mud

I actually bough a pre-wired kit (wiring harness) from RS Guitarworks that I like ALOT- comes with great pots and caps, all neatly wired

I wouldn't do anything you don't need to do to get it sounding how you like it. I'd move in steps. Start by swapping just the pickups, and seeing how you like it. If you want more clarity, try 500K or 1M volume pots. Then, if you want less rolloff of the mids when you turn down the tone pots, try halving or quartering the values of the caps. It's a little more time consuming this way, but the benefits are: 1) you don't spend any more money than you need to, and 2) you get to hear how each change affects the tone, which will inform future decisions. If you swap out everything at once, you don't know exactly what components made what difference.

Also, be sure you spend lots of time carefully setting up your pickups after each step. I feel that if people simply learned to set up their pickups better (or at all), they wouldn't feel the need to do even half the mods that they end up doing.

+1. That's how I approach it.

WHY..does Gibson put those 300k pots in there??.....the neck pickup (490) sounds like it has a blanket thrown over the amp. Just wondering what their reasoning is, as almost everyone thinks they are bad.
