My first "new" bass, Gretsch Electromatic G2220. I paid several hundred $ for it, and it ended up being plywood, and the neck bowed so bad it was unfixable (and GC wouldn't honor the warranty :headache: ) The pups and tuners ended up on the Hofner though.
How is your Hofner and what model is it?Cheap instruments are pretty hit and miss. I have a Gretsch 2210 (on the right) and it's great. Solid, sounds good and plays well, good intonation. Only problem is if you pluck hard it's got a nasty snap to it. Someone recommended flatwounds to tame that, but I haven't had a chance to try it.

Several others in various stages of completion/modding (I build my own basses as well.)
Fender 2011 MIA 60th Anniversary P, Washburn acoustic guitar, heavily modded Dillion SCPB (now modded with dual humbuckers, renamed the ThunderPea), and 2004 Ibanez BTB405QM. Got my basses covered.

Yeah the jackson pickups/preamp are bad sounding, If you swap to active pickups you will probably have to change the preamp. I would swap in some EMG 45P/Js and a BQS preamp.
Bad as in good? Or just plain bad? If it's the latter, I've gotten some good tones with it, but it could probably use an upgrade.
