signature guitars = poser or no??

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

Will you just enjoy a bad joke at the expense of a profoundly not-very-good actor?

I bought an EVH Wolfgang (see profile picture) in June. Like many of you who own signature guitars, my playing is not really Eddie-inspired, but it's a fantastic guitar.

I tell you what some of the sigs are silly fanboy guitars and I guess I'd feel kind of awkward using them but others no issue.

I love my J Mascis Jazzmaster, it is as understated a sig model as you could imagine and yes I love Les Pauls....

unlike the striped series, which are pretty obvious that you are a fanboi, the wolfgangs are just plain good axes.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

It actually worked out pretty hilariously for me. I really like the ESP Roope Latvala shape and vibe. I just didn't like the feature set. So I looked around a bit and discovered the Gus G signature. I found it more to my liking(hardtail bridge, 22 frets, 2 humbuckers), so I bought it. I checked him out after that and became a fan of all his bands, but I wasn't worried about anybody recognising the guitar as a signature. Six months later, he joins Ozzy Osbourne. Needless to say, I was a little worried about the "poser" perception for a while. But I decided not to really care at that point.
I don't really play out with it anymore, as I've found that an ESP Eclipse-II suits me better onstage, but I'm glad I decided not to sell it because it is still one of my favourites. I've changed the pickups on it, so I feel like it's really my sound anyway. Hope this helps!

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

Think about this for a minute...

Tom, Dick, Harry and Percy decide to start a Beatles "Tribute" band. The boys are really good, and sound just like the Beatles, even though Percy is using a Tama drum kit; Tom plays a right-handed P-Bass through an Ampeg SVT; Tom sings Lennon's parts and plays a Strat and an Ovation acoustic thru a Line 6 Spider amp, and Dick plays George's parts on an ES-175 and a Parker Fly on a Bogner Ecstacy.

You go to one of their gigs, and yep...they pretty much sound like The Beatles.

Visually though...wouldn't you WANT the Tribute band to be using Vox amps, a hofner bass, a J-160E, a Rick 325, a Gretsch Tennessean, and a Ludwig kit?

Are they posers for NOT using the right gear?

Bill

No, but they are posers for being in a tribute band.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

I do not believe in signature guitars one bit, however, I do believe in certain features some signature models provide that you cannot find on standard models... special neck profiles, pickups, hardware, etc.

Am I the only one who thought the Jonas Brothers Signature LP Melody Maker was actually a cool guitar? I also feel the same way about Joan Jett's Signature Melody Maker. Both guitars were affordable and had some extra features that made them stand out from similiar priced Gibsons...

Now Signature Accoustics???? Oh Hell No Gibson! You put a different pickguard on a flatop and call it a signature model, then upcharge $500 to $1000 for it? No thanks! Very little is done to accoustic models to make them standout... Fender's Tim Armstrong Hellcat is one of the very few...
