signature guitars = poser or no??

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

Heh yeaaaaa oops. I meant the 666 guitar that the other guy plays. Sorry for the mixup.
the Ultra, Solo and pne of their superstrat shaped are really nice looking. Not sure what...Zacky Vengeance? What his guitar is based on...

Looks like he plays an S1, here's a normal one:

I have that one as a Devil Tribal:

Wish it was a bolt on, it'd be sporting a maple neck as well. :D

and here's my 006:

I'm probably going to strip the finish when it cools off a bit, and put in a dummy single coil (probably just a black cover or something) mounted directly in the neck position.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

Have to agree with the consensus here - all that matters is that the guitar works for you. Play the guitar and ask yourself if you'd buy it if it didn't have a sig on it; if the answer is yes, then go for it!
I have a Jackson Adrian Smith - got it for the great neck and versatility (SSH with a Floyd) and I just got a Clapton strat because I love the way it feels and sounds - I would've bought them whether they were sigs or not.

agreed! My local GC had an Adrian Smith import and a used US model. I played them back to back and honestly couldnt tell a whole lot of diff. The selector switch on the import was more flimsy and another small detail or two, but the feel was there on the import. I really like that model!

I don't know, I think if you're going to be a public performer, have some regard for how your audience perceives you is a good thing.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

Only if you consider participation in message boards an act of showmanship.

I take it that you are keen on keeping things as polished as possible.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

Pretending that any rock music, or any rock star, is purely art and not in service of entertainment is a delusion. A marketable, profit yielding delusion. Saying that a musician shouldn't care what the audience thinks is all part of the "I don't care what the audience thinks" act, as they play the same licks, verse chorus verse, 4/4 time pop-punk set to an audience that payed good money to be entertained. So putting the illusion aside, the truth is that even if you do use a sig guitar at a gig, it's highly unlikely anyone in the audience will realize the fact, or that they'll ignore everything else that's going on in order to ponder how they feel about you playing a sig guitar.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

Well, I'm safe. I have never seen Lukather actually play one of these.

I hate all this signature and endorsement nonsense. It is fraud in almost all cases. The thing actually used by the musician, even when they are in public, if often very different, and sometimes no effort is made to recreate the artists instrument with any accuracy at all, e.g. the Blackmore Strats.

Pickups are probably a bit more OK.

My favorite moment is Steve Anthony playing a Stingray on some famous Van Halen DVD and what you hear for bass has nothing at all to do with what he's playing and it is obviously not a Stingray. Petrucchi magically has an opposite end of spectrum different signature model. Right.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

Although it's been beaten to death, yeah, I wouldn't be against buying a sig guitar if it had specs I preferred compared to the "stock" model or I got it for a good price although I doubt I'd actively go for one.

And again, mirroring everyone here, the only sig axes I ever liked had nothing to do with the artist so there's that.

As for what others'll think, well, hater's gonna hate I guess...

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

I was able to find the Fender Gilmore and Blackmore signature guitars and way below market prices. They are the most comfortable and best all around guitars I have. Would be cool if guitars like the Nile Rogers signature guitar were made without the signature part but then again that's how Fender and others make the big bucks.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

Get whatever you want. If the particular signature guitar has the features you want, get it.

I'm not big on signature gear either but I bought a JP6 a few years ago because of the features/specs. I tried so many guitars and played the JP many times before I bought it. It took me a few weeks to decide. After playing it for a few years, I have to say it's one of the best guitars I've ever played.

I gotta say, I love the way this thing looks and sounds. Doesn't scream METALLICA either. Without the little H on the headstock people would just assume it would just be another custom esp model.

That's a nice guitar. I tried the ESP Snakebyte and hated it. The neck was not working for me.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

The only signature guitars I've ever had, apart from Les Pauls depending on your outlook, have been the 2 USA Peavey Wolfgang Specials I've gotten over the last few weeks.

I didn't get them because of any specific association with EVH, I got them because I'd been after 1 for a while as they fit what I want nowadays (stripped back Rock guitar with 2 humbuckers and a down only Floyd) and when I got offered 2 in exchange for 1 guitar I've not used in a while it seemed like a no brainer!
