signature guitars = poser or no??

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

agreed! My local GC had an Adrian Smith import and a used US model. I played them back to back and honestly couldnt tell a whole lot of diff. The selector switch on the import was more flimsy and another small detail or two, but the feel was there on the import. I really like that model!

+1
I have the import model. I took it to my tech to put a original Super Distortion in the bridge and he thought it was the US model until I showed him the "Made in Indonesia" sticker on the headstock. I've played the US model and it is nice, but not $1,500 nicer!

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

I have a PRS Tim Mahoney SE that I like a lot. I don't really even know who Tim Mahoney is, but I like his guitar...

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

I had a Tripp Eisen signature BC Rich once. Had a hard time selling it. Okay guitar, but it's hard to find out any info about the guitar, and too easy to find out why BC Rich stopped offering them. :D

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

The first "Jeff Beck" strat has the HUGEST neck they ever made for Strats, so I want one because of that. Unfortunately they cost 6X what a generic Strat neck does, because of the name on it...

Can you get Warmoth or USACG to build something similar for you?

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

Anything sigged for someone on Avenged Sevenfold is the worst tho. Don't own one.

:laugh2: One of my students has the Synyster gates one. It's actually a decent guitar even if the neck is on the thick side. But yeah... those looks.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

I dont have a synyster gates but i do have a revenger which is the same shape with a different headstock. Luckily i am trading mine for a charvel soon enough. I hate the stripes on those gates models they look cheap and predictable.

Lots of the articles covering Jeff Beck refer to the very large guitar neck he used to always work with. Some other additions I would probably not want....but one change from his current signature would be a return to the 7.25 neck radius. Same for Eric Clapton. Although both artists requested the flatter 9.5 fretboard radius of their actual Fender signature guitars.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

I really like the look and specs of the Jackson Broderick Soloist. I hope to own one someday...poser or no :knockedou

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

It's all in how you wield it. For example, if you wear a T-shirt with the face of the artist or his band while playing his guitar and/or a set of mostly his songs.....that's better done in private for your own amusement or strictly in a tribute band. :dunce: It's like going to The Louvre in Paris wearing an American flag shirt and a baseball cap that says "Who Farted?". Screams tourist, i.e., you don't belong here.

And I've said it before, but I'll sat it again: most people simply don't look right holding JEMs, especially the '80s dayglow models or guitars with some other kind of flashy custom graphic. If you look like an average bloke who works in a convenience store when not tending to your rock star dream, about 70 lbs overweight, short hair, etc, just get a Les Paul Studio and call it day, eh? ;)

I like numerous sig models, because they are killer guitars. I wouldn't buy them thinking "now I am Van Halen", etc. They can be a subtle tribute to that artist (especially when recording), but I would never want to make it about imitating someone else. I consider the famous red-black-white striped EVH guitar a bit too sacred and iconic to play on stage, because EVERYBODY knows who played that guitar. But a sig Fender Strat from anyone? Who would even know the difference except diehard guitar geeks?!

I dig the recent Jeff Beck strats in Surf Green w/rosewood, it's next on my list, actually.

Ultimately, it you want it, get it. But like someone said earlier, put a little thought into how your audience will perceive you if you are going to play on stage with it...

Those Broderick models look really cool. A good example here, because that one is not some silly sig graphic, but a unique tool. I really like them too.. cept the price tag!!

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

Are you talking about the imports or the USA models? Either way, it's got to be a better value than the Matthew Broderick signature Jackson.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

I tried out a really nice candy red Squier Strat in stores recently. It felt amazing, and was clearly higher quality than even the normally great Classic Vibe stuff. Apparently it's the signature guitar of some guy named Simon Neil from a band called Biffy Clyro. Never heard any of their music in my life, I have no idea whether the band is good or not, but that strat will probably be my next guitar.

I gotta say, I love the way this thing looks and sounds. Doesn't scream METALLICA either. Without the little H on the headstock people would just assume it would just be another custom esp model.

Oh my God... i just realized this thing has 2 pickup selectors. I googled it and apparently the top one isn't even connected. It is just there IN CASE you want to hook it up to do something. So you can make it the pickup selector if you WANT or wire it to do something else. But out of the case it does NOTHING.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

Isn't that how Uncle Jimmy's guitars are?

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

Ive always been kinda shy about signature guitars, unless they have the feature set I want.
</thread>If you're buying a sig guitar that doesn't really have the features you need/prefer, there is a probably a poser aspect to the purchase.

On the whole, I'd say it also depends on how closely the guitar is associated with the artist (EVH striped series comes to mind). If the guitar is what you're looking for in terms of looks and features, then it's "your" guitar regardless of whose name is on the model. In the case of the DeMartini sig, DreX is probably right that most folks wouldn't even realize it's a sig guitar.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

With the possible exception of a striped up EVH model sig models don't bother me. The stripes are just a little too personal of a touch for me

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

You're only a poser if you're failing to do justice to the music played by the original artist.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

What about a guitar refinished into a tribute to on of your favorite bands. Is that a bit poo?

I think not :dunno:
