Speaker for my Peavey Classic 30?

BloodRose

Professional Scapegoat
I really like my 30, especially once I retubed with JJs, but its always seemed too mellow and taken a backseat to my Ultra plus. Well, today I got it out and plugged it up to my fav paul and I was getting the best tone of my life... was almost magic!! So responsive and soulful! I have wanted to replace the speaker for years but never did cuz it was a back burner project, but now, I have to!
It sounds decent, but the lows get alittle murky on the paul. I want a speaker with a full bottom to get the paul tone, but want to keep it from mudding up.. Problem is, there are so many choices...
Im looking at Eminence and there is the . So many choices! These are just ones with descriptions I like..

Any suggestions??

Re: Speaker for my Peavey Classic 30?

Yeah, I want to change the speaker in mine too. Right now I turn it towards a wall and play through my 412 cab. I am getting rid of the C30 soon for an ENGL.

Re: Speaker for my Peavey Classic 30?

A buddy of mine suggested a Jensen Neo. Us Speaker suggested a Eminence Tonker.
Anyone played a Tonker? Eminence offers so many choices, its hard to decide. British or patriot? Many other factors too.

I want this baby to maintain clarity under the lows of my les paul and be alittle less harsh on the highs. Otherwise it sounds friggin amazing!

Re: Speaker for my Peavey Classic 30?

Eenie meenie minie mo an Eminance. I'm sure it will own the Blue Turd.

Re: Speaker for my Peavey Classic 30?

Celestion G12H30 sounds great in a C30.
I suggest the broken-in hellatone from avatar.

Re: Speaker for my Peavey Classic 30?

What kind of music do you play BloodRose? Also, what type of tone(s) are you into?

I am a big Eminence fan. Right now, from your description I would suggest a SwampThang. It sounds huge, big bottom, thick mids, with balanced highs. Very touch sensitive and never muddy, extremely clear. It is very hard to break up, will give a clear, uncolored representation of your tone. And it is staggeringly loud. I have two in an Earcandy BuzzBomb and it dominates any cab you put next to it including most 4x12s.
Cannibis Rex is another good choice, it might be better considering you are pushing only 30 watts and the Rex handles about 50, the Swamp can take 150 and it might sound too dark.
On the Red Coat side I might recommend the Tonespotter, Tonker, or Wizard with the Spotter as my first choice for ya!

If you go to the Eminence site they have a tone guide and sound samples so you can compare and get a better idea of what the speakers sound like.

Good luck!

Re: Speaker for my Peavey Classic 30?

I play blues, rock and some metal. (ill use my ultra Plus for metal tho) Im getting more into instrumental rock tho. I was looking at the swamp thing..Im afraid that since it has thick bottom end and my paul does too, it may have too much low end. Al from US Speaker said the Tonker would give me the bass response and smooth out the highs and give me a warm mid range.

Thanks for the tip on going to the Emi site. I dont know why I didnt think of that.. I was just going thru US speaker. and wishing they had clips.

Believe it or not, the time proven Emi GB12 is a great speaker for that amp. The Emi Private Jack might even bit a little bit better choice. There are so many choices that work well in the C30. Like a Deluxe Reverb, it has almost become an industry "default" amplifier. But to be honest with you, as someone already mentioned, the stock speaker is so horrible that you will be very happy with just about any decent aftermarket replacement. JMO of course.

Re: Speaker for my Peavey Classic 30?

Some good suggestions here, but, IMHO, an Eminence Tonker is a poor choice. Haven't used one w/my Classic 30, but I've used them w/other amps, and I thought overdriven sounds were fizzy. That's w/Marshall, Hiwatt, and Fender. I realize that description is at odds w/Eminence's description. They do have an ok clean sound. And, I do like Eminence, in general. I have Pvt Jacks in a closed back 2x12, and they rock. I'm not sure how the Pvt Jack would pan out in an open 1x12.

Man, I was just playing, and the C30 really smokes if you crank it up. I forgot how good it sounded.

Yeah, the Tonker is like a brighter UK version of the Swamp, both speaker designs stem from the Legend 121 model. Both will knock you off your heels! It might be hard to get any breakup considering they can handle over 150 watts and your amp only pushes 30.
I think the ToneSpotter might work the best for you. It's not going to be as loud as a Tonker, but the tone might be closer to what you need.
The description says "a 12” British speaker with warm, smooth tone, once lost but not forgotten. Very smooth and warm with a fat bottom end and highs that cut through the mix. Warm and thick overtones. Authentic British flavor, well suited for Blues and Classic Rock." The tone chart says it has aggressive fat/round bass with warm mids and moderate treble. That sounds like a great match for your styles of music.

Re: Speaker for my Peavey Classic 30?

Does the Private Jack get too mushy?? I had always wanted to get a greenback for it based on what I heard. Never played a green back tho.. When I saw the Private Jack was like a green b, I was interested but was afraid maybe it would break up to much..

Re: Speaker for my Peavey Classic 30?

In listening to the clips, the tonespotter, private jack and tonker all sound similar, just one more compressed then the other. The one that has really gotten my attention is the wizard. seems louder and more open..

Odd that the Tonker and Pvt Jack would sound similar in a sound clip. I've used both, and they are very different.

Re: Speaker for my Peavey Classic 30?

There just didnt seem to be a world of diff on the clip.. Im sure real world would be different. how did they differ in your experience??

Re: Speaker for my Peavey Classic 30?

today I just plugged up the 30 to my 4x12. holy cow this thing sounds so $@#^ good!! My strat sounds great and the lesters and Michael Kelly just sing!!

It seems like the amp excels at traditional rock sounds. When I plug up my Kramer or my shred type guitars, I know my ultra excels there. but Im so excited with this amp. ive had it for years but never really got the vibe. I think its cuz my taste and style have gone more towards a singing tone as opposed to metallica chug. Im gonna narrow down and get my eminence ordered within a few days.

I just plugged up my tele. OMG!! Ive never been a tele person, but Im getting sooo many beautiful tones out right now, Im starting to get this urge to put on a bandana and some skull rings..

The Pvt Jack was similar to a Greenback as far as break up went, and sound in general. The Tonker reminded me of some higher end EV gtr spkrs that are designed to play clean at higher volumes. When I did break it up, with a variety of amps (Marshall, Hiwatt, Fender, w/and w/o an OD pedal), the distorted sound was just buzzy and crappy. I know that's not a great description, but it just was brittle and unpleasant. I remember a friend who had some of those EVs in a Fender, and they did the same thing when pushed w/a pedal. It did sound decent clean. This evaluation was done in the same closed back 2x12 cab.

IMHO, a Tonker wouldn't be a good choice for a 30 watt rock amp. BTW, I'm in the same boat as far as replacing the stock spkr in my recently acquired Classic 30...
