Re: Straplocks: Dunlop VS. Schaller

I'm also a dedicated Schaller user. Twice, I've had Dunlop locks fail onstage in the middle of a set. I managed to catch my guitar before it hit the floor both times, thank goodness. Schallers have never let me down and, like others have said here, just feel much more solid in the first place.

Re: Straplocks: Dunlop VS. Schaller

Wow, just noticed this thread had been dormant for two years until my post. Oops. Oh well.

Re: Straplocks: Dunlop VS. Schaller

No clue I was joining a ghost chasing but I only use Dunlops and when they fail it is Operator Error 99% of the time you didn't click them together properly in a hurry. Schallers have a basic flaw and that is aggressive movement can cause them to jump out of the channel. Seen it happen a few times only once did it result in guitar breakage and it was pretty ugly. For the most part they both do the job well enough and like anything guitar related is a matter of personal taste.

Re: Straplocks: Dunlop VS. Schaller

Once again...Schaller. I've had he Dunlops fail, nearly dropping a LP Special. I like a touch of clear nail polish on the strap's nut.

Re: Straplocks: Dunlop VS. Schaller

I use Dunlops on everything
but in fairness
I have seen one fail
it was on a 90's Carvin Bass I sold to my buddy
the one on the bridge stuck in
wouldn't release
it may have been the victim of an irate dog as he had one at the time

in any case, I do remove mine from time to time and oil them
not WD40 as that removes the gunk and evaporates leaving no lubrication

a drop of motor oil or sewing machine oil
wipe off excess with a rag

Re: Straplocks: Dunlop VS. Schaller

Old thread I know, but......

I picked up a set of the ernie ball strap locks last year. Similar to the dunlop design, lower profile but are less secure and too easy to unclip . No problems but I did not trust em, took em off after a month. Both of my Les Pauls have the new Gibson oversize strap buttons and I have been using the newish Fender rubber washers on all my guitars..5 bucks for 2 sets.

Re: Straplocks: Dunlop VS. Schaller

Well, I live just 30 minutes away from the Grolsch plant, so it's always been those rubber washers. That and the beer of course, although I'm more into special brews these days.

OMG! An Astrozombie zombie thread.

Re: Straplocks: Dunlop VS. Schaller

They are both good but I prefer the Schaller system. To me, it feels a little more secure. I do have one guitar with a DiMarzio strap and it's also solid.

Re: Straplocks: Dunlop VS. Schaller

I use a quarter with a hole drilled in it and a slightly longer screw. I can't take the strap off without a screwdriver, but my guitar sure as hell isn't hitting the ground.

Re: Straplocks: Dunlop VS. Schaller

I like Dunlops much better. Much easier to hook and unhook the strap. The Shallers are a bit annoying because you have to grasp and pull up on the little knob, versus pushing the button on the Dunlops.

Re: Straplocks: Dunlop VS. Schaller

I've used Dunlops since '99 and they've not failed me once. I see no reason to change.

Re: Straplocks: Dunlop VS. Schaller

Schaller straplocks have worked well for me for ages. They're on all of my guitars these days. I do find it's a pain in the ass to attach them to thicker leather guitar straps though, it would be nice if the threaded part that you put the nut on was a tiny bit longer.

Re: Straplocks: Dunlop VS. Schaller

I prefer the Schaller because the button sits closer to the guitar body. A Dunlop button sticks out too far for me. The guitar hangs more comfortably with a Schaller.

Re: Straplocks: Dunlop VS. Schaller

I'm 63 been playing since high school. Started using dunlops in my 30's - never dropped a guitar never had a failure. Put some schallers on two of my guitars about 6 months ago because I thought the design looked good. I went to put on my guitar this evening and the little knob fell off and the little piston fell out as did the spring. I could not believe my eyes. Just ordered several new sets of Dunlops. Never going back. :grumble:
