GUITARS:
  • 1994 Les Paul Standard; modified with a JB in the bridge, SH-1 '59 in the neck and push/pull pots on all four knobs with Jimmy Page wiring; strap locks
  • 2000 MIJ Fender Strat with rosewood fingerboard; all stock except for locking tuners and strap locks
  • 2003 MIJ Fender Tele with maple fingerboard; modified with a Harmonic Design Super 90 single coil in the bridge, Lace Sensor Blue single coil in the neck and a five-way switch with the following functions: 1 = bridge only, 2 = out of phase, 3 = series (emulates humbucker wiring), 4 = parallel, 5 = neck
  • 2003 ES-333 (the stripped down version of the 335); all stock
  • 1996 Guild D4-NT acoustic with Fishman internal pickup installed
    Keep all the guitars except the ES-333
AMPS (all tubes stock):
  • Mesa/Boogie DC-5 50-watt head with Mesa 4x12 cab filled with Celestion Vintage 30s
    Keep that Mesa, sell the other 2 amps
PEDALS (listed in alphabetical order):

  • Keep These Pedals:
  • Analog Man Bi-CompROSSor (compressor)
  • Analog Man Clone Chorus (stereo chorus)
  • Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner
    Sell the rest of the pedals and all the rack stuff

    Keep:
  • Fender 6" patch cables (used to connect pedals to each other)

I'd swap seths or burstbuckers into the LP std, and put texas hots ar an aps/twangbanger set into the MIJ strat. I'd also either drop phat cats into the es333 or sell it for another hollowbody.

I'd also off the DC5 for either a vibrolux or a plexi reissue.

Great rig as it is, though.

+ 1 on getting an A/B box - Barber makes a good one. Get one amp for clean and one amp for gain and trim your pedals down to the bare essentials (Chorus, Echo/Delay, compression, Wah maybe a univibe type) - that's what I would do.

Also try JJ tubes in your amps - I have thme in my Mark IV combo and I love them.

So far these responses have been great. At some point I think I'll put together a stats list of how many people would choose to keep/dump/modify which items.

Just for the record -- and I'm only saying this because of some of the wah suggestions -- the Geoffrey Teese RMC3 *is* a true-bypass pedal. So I've got that and the Dunlop Crybaby. I list both because I have both, but I only keep one of them on my board.

(Oh yeah, I also forgot to mention that I already have a pedal board, too.)

It was more than a few years ago that I myself kind of came to the revealation that the uber-complex rig was just unholy unwieldy for most applications. Even setting them up in one place for posterity was almost totally unsatisfying for me if I didn't have the potential of being able to put it to use either recording or gigging.

I sold just about everything off that wasn't a guitar or amp and bought a handfull of pedals, most of which just collect dust these days.

Are the rigs you folks are describing something you'd actually do anything with other than have them?

I meantioned three amps....but I wouldn't do all that amp switching ****..just one at a time =)

my rig's simple...guitar, wah, delay pedal (which should arrive soon..gettin 'a good used guyatone md3!) right into my head..end of story....and that's how I like it....soon I'll have a wireless too....but I like it simple..

Okay, I geeked out and ran some numbers to see what the group's tendency is so far. Here's what I've come up with (numbers rounded)...

GUITARS:
  • 75% would keep the Les Paul
  • 60% would keep the Guild acoustic
  • 60% would keep the Strat
  • 70% would keep the Tele
  • 50% would keep the ES-333
Those who would keep the Strat are big on replacing pickups, something I plan on doing at some point when I can afford it. I'd also refret the neck with jumbo or medium jumbo frets at some point.

AMPS:
  • 33% would keep the Mesa DC-5
  • 70% would keep the Vox AC-30
  • 75% would keep the Fender Super Reverb
Almost universally the group feels I should be running some kind of A/B/Y box, another feature I plan on adding to the rig.

EFFECTS:

This group is all over the place with regard to effects (a testament to the variety of styles in the group). However, the group generally seemed to like the modified TS-9 and modified DS-1 while caring little for the Sun Face fuzz, unmodified DS-1, Hotcake, Bi-CompROSSor, modified Blues Driver, Boss EQ, Demeter tremolo and Digitech digital reverb. I've gotta tell you that I'm totally in love with the Bi-Comp and can't imagine using a drive pedal w/o EQ since I've picked up the Boss GE-7.

What I found most interesting is how much folks would want to sell/replace the Mesa. I must admit that I've been leaning in that same direction.

I'd sex up those Fender guitars extra good. I've always wanted to have intimacy with something made in Japan. :naughty:

I'd keep the guitars and the amps. You never know what type of gig is going to come your way. I'd sell just about everything else, except the tuner, the Line 6 delay and the univibe. Running those with what I've already got will do.

I would sell it all, and get a Music Man Axis and JP model, a fasel true bypass wah, a delay pedal, a chorus pedal, and a Mesa Mark 4. That's all you need, I don't do tap dances on stage. I headbang.
