The J Mascis only comes in that terrible purple sparkle...and the SY sigs only come in one colour each...

I'm fine with burst or black...in fact I could care less what colour a guitar is...I ended up wiht a burst one.

Where is Danglybanger when you need him?

I've been wondering this ever since I went on my Fender kick.

I could go with one of these.

I REALLY like the Sonic Youth ones. I'd prefer the Thurston model, because it has jazzmaster pickups, but i wouldnt knock the blue one out of bed.

The SY sigs are cool but very streamlined and sort of purpose built...I'd bet you'd either love them or hate them.

The ones you pictured are the Classic Players...by all counts great guitars and the tweaks really help them out.

The question is what is your budget and how much true Jazzmaster do you really want??

Thats the thing. i'm debating whether i should pickup the classic player or the costello model for myself or i should get the blue sonic youth one because its what works best with the sound of my band.

im guessing my budget is up to around 1500

Re: To anyone who's played a Fender Jazzmaster..

the sonic youth ones look THE BEST and they eliminate all the (in my opinion) useless "Rhythm Circuit" options

we just got a Blacktop at my shop and I'm loving the crap out of it every chance i get...awesome bang per dollar and i'm kind of wanting to get one to replace the Jaguar I just sold :(

but just knowing what you've already got in your stable, i think you should at least get the one with single coils. You have high-output humbuckers in every other plank of wood you own...I would hate to be in that situation.

anyway for me it depends on what you want...Sonic Youth wins for style...I wouldn't waste my money on a Mascis or a Costello unless I really wanted those specific paint jobs...otherwise i'd just try a few in the classic colors and buy the one that feels the best...

or if you just want a road warrior that you can thrash the crap out of, those Blacktops are great...lots of dudes would hate it but I loved how switching from the neck pickup to the humbucker was like night and day...perfect for my grunge-influenced habit of switching to a single coil (or splitting a humbucker) during my clean passages and using the full-bore humbucker for heavy parts...

eh y'know how it is...it's hard to tell a dude which guitar is the best guitar cuz most of 'em are at least "good"...you really shoulda just bought my Jag when you had the chance tho hahahaha

Jazzmaster pickups are not like Strat or Tele pickups...or Jag pickups for that matter....they are like Jazzmaster pickups, they are their own thing and have their own sound. Sort of dark and twangy, a little plinky and lack sustain.

They remind me more of P-90's than any Fender pups

Here's my buddy John ripping up his Jazzmaster

:lmao:

I like the blacktop. It looks great. However, it doesn't have the jazzmaster bridge pickup. that bums me out.

becasause the L Ranaldo model has humbuckers, but they're the Wide Range humbuckers. After experimenting and hearing my guitars through different amps, (the fender deluxe, the JCM800), I can safely say that I get along better with low to medium output pickups. the humbuckers in my Jaguar are only about 8k.

Im interested int he Wide Range humbuckers because I think they might be what Im after in terms of a humbucker.

I wish i could put jazz master pickups in the blacktop.

Re: To anyone who's played a Fender Jazzmaster..

^ that's totally any option

custom pickguard + nice new JM pickup = what? $100? $150 tops?

Re: To anyone who's played a Fender Jazzmaster..

The tremolo's placing has been moved, like the classic player.

Yep.

I wanted to look into the Blacktop JM and do the same thing...pull out hat bridge bucker and go back with stock JM singles but the headstock bugs me...I know it's a small thing but I like the true JM headstock better than the one on the Blacktop.

you cant go back to jm singles because the bridge pickup route wont fit it.

Re: To anyone who's played a Fender Jazzmaster..

enjoooooy

Here's hoping...I've wanted a JM off and on for yedars but never found one during an ON time when I had the cash then a few years ago I just stopped looking for them in general.

Got the itch a few weeks ago and hit all thelocal spots, none of any kind in stock to try but I took the plunge anyway...I hope I dig it but if not no worries, at least I will know.

Re: To anyone who's played a Fender Jazzmaster..

if it doesnt work out, there's always duncan pickups for JM. :smokin:
