I think I'll end up yanking the pickups anyway...

The classic player JM pickups are constructed like P-90's but are voiced more like a JM but hotter and withmore mids...not sure I want that...butI'll give 'em a shot first anyway.

I think ill go best of both worlds and get a wide range for the bridge and an antiquity for the neck. like having both SY guitars.

Not entirely true.

The Fender JM pickup has its single coil wound around six individual polepiece magnets. The P90 has its coil wound around a plastic bobbin. The dual bar magnets ride below the coil rather than through it.

Before blueman_335 joins in, I shall add the "anorak" historical detail that there was a pre-P90 Gibson single coil pickup with six rod magnet polepieces. It did not last very long.

I bolded the important parts...

Vintage Jazzmaster pickups ARE wound like most vintage Fender pickups...6 rod magnets a set of bobbins and a coil of copper.

However, the pickups in the Classic Player Jazzmaster use a slightly hotter than vintage wind and a pair of bar magnets, one on either side of a set of 6 adjustible steel screw pole pieces...much like a, Gibson P-90.

No worries, there are lots of things out there to remember...

FWIW, Fender hasn't used CuNiFe mags in a long,long time...thus why current WR Buckers don't sond right...in fact new WR buckers are built like Gibson buckers...dead slugs and bar magnets...

I read something about this on another forum, and I asked one of the guys in the thread about it, and he said that he's tried the new "WR" humbuckers, bought a set of the old pickups for 600 dollars (****!) and also has the GFS copies. He says that the newer fender ones dont sound anything like them, and that the GFS copies are pretty close to the tone, he said the tone is something like 85-90 percent there.

Original WR Buckers can sell for more than $600 in some cases!

The new ones from Fender don't sound anything like the originals...as for the GFS I can't imagine they would either...they are still constructed like Gibson pickups which leads to a very different sound.

There are a few guys out there making copies of the WR buckers and doing it right but not many!

Duncan CS offers a Wind Range style bucker but I have no idea how it is built...

At which point, the CP JM pickup ceases to behave like a real Jazzmaster pickup. (Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing is subjective.)

If Fender is going to put a P90-style pickup inside the wrong cover, wouldn't it make far more sense to have a standard HB outline?

Yeah, I heard that too but I also hear that they are still not using the right materals...however I don't know that for sure sine I haven't seen one yet.

Your guess is as good as mine...

Based on what I've heard they don't really sond like P-90's either yet they are a sort of a cross between a JM pickup and a P-90. Like you said that is not really good or bad just different however I don't think it's gonna be for me if I'm looking for classic JM tone...

I have a CP JM on the way and I'll be sure and pop in here wiht my thoughts on the guitar and the pickups...

I'll pick up a lee ranaldo jazzmaster on the bay if it pops up. i just hope they dont try to sell it as vintage.
